Some Background information on the Sioux tribe.
  • The Sioux tribe lived in the nineteenth century.
  • This Tribe live on the plains and relies on the
existence of the buffalo because the land cannot
    be farmed on.

Indian Homes
A Drawing of a Typical Tepee
Inside a traditional Tepee.
5
The Native American home
  • Native Americans would usually have large
families so that the family would not die out and
would be safe. Everyone would sleep in the tepee
on fur rugs on the floor.
  • Everything would be done in the tepee from eating
unless a family prefered to eat as a community to
    sleeping.

6
The role of Men
  • The native American mans job was to protect and
provide for the whole tribe. Men worthy of it
would one day hunt the buffalo. Men married maybe
two women to keep him safe and provide health to
his family. This is called polygamy and it was
quite legal in the tribes. Many think that this
is terrible but it help the women if a man died
    whilst hunting or raiding tribes.

7
The role of women
  • The role of women was to cook food and make
clothing and other furnishing for he tepee. The
women of the Sioux tribe were very hard working
people and most of the time were making leather
    and looking after many children.

8
Role of children.
  • The role of children was to become part of the
working Indians life they learnt how to hunt and
provide with other materials also they studied
the great spirit and how to please the great
spirit so that they have a good after life

9
Warfare
  • Fighting in a war was the best way to earn
honour. Every boy dreamed of taking part in the
fighting because it showed how brave you were.
Also there was lots of dances and celebrations if
    victorious

Warriors going to war.
10
Importance of Horses
  • Horses arrived in north America after the
fighting in the south west. Quickly the Native
Americans realised how valuable horses were
because it meant better hunting which gave more
food and then their tribe were more healthy and
lasing than before. The outbreak of horses meant
there were no need for crops and they soon lost
any of there farming skills. Horses were a
warriors most prize possession and made the tribe
more aggressive. The want for horses grew and
tribes started midnight raids to gain horses from
    other tribes.

11
Religion and the Great Spirit.
  • The Indians believed in the great spirit that
could bring evil or good to the tribe. The people
of the tribe spent most of their lives pleasing
the great spirit. The great spirit or wakan tanka
is the thing that the Indians say gave them sun,
earth, sky, mountains and everything around them
    which were alive.

12
Medicine and illness
  • The illness and medicine problems were sorted out
by the medicine man the second most important man
in the tribe. He or sometimes she has good
understanding of dealing with spirits and a good
knowledge of medicine. This person would have
powerful healing miracles and other powers also
they would organise all the ceremonies.

Dances and Ceremonies
  • The Indians held many dances and ceremonies all
meaning and hoping for luck in either hunting or
other daily things. For example the buffalo dance
was to give luck and help from the great spirit
for coming hunt. People say that these dances
looked barbaric and were just horrible but really
they had a big meaning because the dances were
    the same as a prayer.

14
Scalping and counting coup
  • Scalping was a way for the tribe to be safe in
the after life. The Indians say that if you have
no scalp you can not enter the spirit world,
therefore they would not have as many enemies.
Many natives fear scalping but to scalp an enemy
is a great honour and earns counting coup.
Counting coup is when a member of the tribe
counts his points in battle . Warriors would have
a special stick if they touch the enemy with that
stick they would earn maximum points. A warrior
would display his coups by having more feathers
    in his headdress.

15
Law.
  • The Native American Law was different from ours.
To start with I have mentioned that polygamy (the
act of marrying two people at once) is perfectly
normal in the Sioux tribe. Apart from that
difference the Indians haven't got a law to abide
by they will be punished by the chief if he
thought that that person had done wrong. Instead
of a written law the Sioux tribe had a council
which were made up of the chief and people the
chief thought were intelligent and good team
members they discussed about hunting to war.
