2Priority /Priority Component (e.g. Strategic
Objective, etc.)
The morbidity and mortality statistics of the
Hungarian population are among the worst in
Europe and it is assumed that genetic as well as
epigenetic factors play a significant role in
this phenomenon. Genomic research is very likely
to provide a new framework to approach this
problem. However, Hungarian genomic research is
in its infancy, rather fragmented and unfocused.
The main objective of the present project
proposal is to obtain specific support for
changing this unfortunate situation.
- Main goal(s) of Specific Support Action
- Structural and operational organization of an
integrated human genomic program in Hungary based
on studies and comparison of European human
genome projects - Formation of a stable bioinformatics background
for genomic activities - Development of a biobanking system
- Establishment of a network of Hungarian SME's
related to human genomics projects - Clarification of ethical and legal aspects of
genomic research - Organization of a COGENE Conference to provide a
forum for genomic initiatives
3- Key issues
- functioning national genomic consortium providing
studies, strategic initiatives, website, etc. - setup of the new computing environment, the SMEs
network system - workshops on bioinformatics, biobanking
- quetionnaires, data collection for providing
practical guides, proposals, dissemination - adopted Code of Ethics
- COGENE Conference
- Expected achievements/impact
- formulation and initiation of new and specific
genomic projects as strategic objectives of the
Hungarian health authorities - integrating Hungarian human genomic research into
the European programs - inform the society
- development of a more efficient bioinformatic
system - well organized biobanking system will enable
Hungarian science to be involved in large
European comparative population studies, identify
genetic features/markers, characterize the MHC
(HLA) gene pool in Hungary - facilitate successful and ethically acceptable
RD activity in Hungary and the European Union - promote the competitiveness of the European
genomic research and development based SMEs - help to survey research activities on epigenetic
studies
