Title: Mars Student Imaging Project MSIP

1
Mars Student Imaging Project (MSIP)
  • Bringing Authentic Mars Research to Students in
    Grades 5-14

2

3
MSIP Overview
  • Students are prepared for their Mars project
using a guided set of activities involving a
    model project.
  • Students write a scientific proposal for a
project involving data obtained from the THEMIS
Visual Camera on board 2001 Mars Odyssey.

4
MSIP Overview (cont.)
  • Selected student teams will work with mission
planners, scientists, and educators to select a
site on Mars to image using the THEMIS camera.
  • When the image is received from the spacecraft,
student teams will analyze their data and publish
their results in an online journal maintained by
    ASU Mars Education.

5
MSIP Curriculum
  • Five curriculum manuals are available for
    download

6
MSIP Curriculum (cont.)
  • MSIP curriculum is designed to be integrated into
    the regular science curriculum.
  • The project provides new ways to teach the same
    material.
  • Teacher Manual provides tips for conducting the
project and for working within existing school
    science objectives.
  • All materials are aligned to National Science
    Education Standards.

7
Participation Procedure
  • Fill out MSIP application
  • Download MSIP curriculum guides
  • Complete model activity with students and submit
    Model Activity Results Form
  • Compose and submit Mars Participating Science
    Team Proposal
  • Participate in on-site, distance-learning, or
    archived-data activities
  • Submit science results

8
On-site Activities
  • Student teams have the option of choosing a 5-day
or 3-day format for their activities.
  • Student team representatives work with scientists
and educators to process their image.
  • Representatives are trained in peer tutoring
techniques to bring their experience back to the
    classroom.

9
Distance-Learning Activities
  • Similar in format to on-site activities, but
interaction takes place through Internet video-
    and teleconferences, email, and webchats.
  • All activities take place at the home
institution, so the entire team can participate
    at once.

10
Archived-Data Activities
  • Proposals which are not selected for on-site or
distance learning activities will receive an
archived image related to their project that
was taken by a previous team.
  • Archived-data teams will have email interaction
    with the MSIP staff.

11
Why participate in MSIP?
  • Curriculum is engaging and is aligned to the
    National Science Education Standards.
  • Students are given the chance to participate in
    authentic Mars exploration.
  • Student teams are given a chance to participate
    in a real-life educational opportunity.
  • All teams who follow the given procedure will
participate in one of the three formats of
    activities.

12
Why participate in MSIP? (cont.)
  • Participating student teams will receive a
poster-size THEMIS image to analyze and publicize
    their educational achievements within their
    communities.
  • Students and lead facilitator will receive a
certificate of participation when the teams
final results have been submitted to the on-line
    journal.
  • Any individual who uses the teams results must
    credit the team.
