Yelena MartinLeap Frog
  • EMM111
  • Maths Investigation,
  • Assignment 2

It is not the answer that is important, but the
process at which you go through
2
The Investigation
  • On a row of five spaces there are four counters,
    two red and two blue.
  • The counters can move one space, left or right
into vacant spot or jump one counter into a
    vacant spot.
  • CHALLENGE Using these rules can you get the red
counters in the blue counters spot and vice versa
in the least amount of moves.

3
Moves.
  • One space left or right
  • Leap one counter left or right

4
Plan of Attack
  • At first we made up a board (this was later
    extended to have more boxes)
  • Let us have a hands on visual of what we were
    working with.
  • Then started drawing out what we came up with
  • After many tries settled on 8.

5
What if (paths taken)
  • What if there were more counters and therefore
    spaces?
  • What if the counters could jump more than one
    counter at a time?
  • What if they were numbered instead of coloured?

6
1. More counters..
  • Same idea
  • Original Idea
  • Soon found to be wrong

7
Formula Discovered
c/m c 2
c (c 2) m
Note In formula c is the amount of counters for
EACH colour.
8
2. Longer Jumps
  • 1st Jumping 2 counters.

9
2.
  • 2nd Jumping as manyas wanted.

Note The amount of moves is one more then the
total amount of counters.
10
3. Numbered Counters
  • Is there a pattern?-Add more counters.
  • What if they could jump more than one?
  • Does the same idea/way work effectively each
    time?

11
3.
  • Kept trying to get less
  • Used same ideafor each one
  • Moved into excel,to keep data neater

12
3. What if they could jump more than one?
  • Started with 4 and added more
  • Then took away counters
  • Found a pattern
  • 3,3,6,6,9,9etc.
