Understanding Downtime
Disaster 1
Disaster Recovery High Availability (Continuo
us Operations)
Unplanned 9
Planned 90
Downtime refers to a period of time or a
percentage of a time span that a machine or
system (usually a computer server) is offline or
not functioning, usually as a result of either
system failure (such as a crash or routine
maintenance.
Dont Confuse Reliability with Availability!
18
Understanding the Cost of Downtime
  • Revenue
  • Direct Loss
  • Compensatory Payments
  • Lost Future Revenue
  • Billing Losses

Productivity Number of employees affected X hours
out times X burdened hourly rate
  • Financial Performance
  • Revenue Recognition
  • Cash Flow
  • Lost Discounts (A/P)
  • Payment Guarantees
  • Stock Price
  • Damaged Reputation
  • Customers
  • Suppliers
  • Financial Markets
  • Banks
  • Business Partners

Know your downtime costs per hour, day, week, etc.
Other Expenses Temporary Employees, Equipment
rental, overtime costs, extra shipping costs,
travel expenses, legal obligations
Gartner estimates range from 106,000 to 183,000
per hour of lost revenue.

EchoStreams Replication Process
Production Server
Primary Storage
  • Applications write to primary storage as usual
  • EchoStream maintains an exact replica of the
    Production Servers data
  • Copies all disk writes
  • Ordered by time sequence
  • Across an IP network
  • Prior to the Recovery Server overwriting data,
the information is saved in an undo log
  • Recover the applications data by selecting
  • Recovery point (Time)
  • Recovery location on either Production or
    Recovery Server
  • While the clone is in use, data protection
    continues

Advantages of EchoStreams CDP
  • Addresses the biggest pain points in data
    protection
  • RPO and RTO improvement
  • Pick the recovery point after the problem occurs,
    not before it
  • Capable of creating a read/write clone of
production data from any point in time
  • Easy testing against current production data
  • Backup window reduction
  • Offload report generation processes

24
How EchoStream Works
Ethernet (IP) network attachment
  • Data Tap on Source Server captures changes to
    protected logical volumes
  • Writes to local buffer occur synchronously
  • then are asynchronously transferred to the
    target server
  • Replicates only changes to production data
  • Compression used to minimize bandwidth
    requirements
  • Contexts used to maintain write order consistency
  • Storage can be heterogeneous

25
Where Are Changes Captured
  • Application independent data capture
  • Works with or without a file system

26
Quick and Easy Data Recovery
  • Easy to use slider
  • Choose the date, time, minute and second
  • Create a clone on the recovery server or rewind
    production data

27
EchoCluster High Availability
Two-Node cluster With local HA for the Server
Shared Data Store
  • Provides HA or Failover for the server
    environment
  • Heart beat monitoring for continuous business
    service and server protection
  • Ideal for clients where local HA meets their
    business continuity needs
  • Solution not closely tied to the OS level
  • Cost effective, simple failover solution

29
Wizard Driven Configuration
  • Enter node information
  • Auto-discovery of storage and network interfaces
  • Choose monitored applications
  • Create desired monitors and alerts

30
Browser Based Monitoring and Control
  • Monitor your cluster from anywhere!
  • Easy to identify, graphic notification of
    problems.
  • Switch servers at the click of a button.

31
Integration with EchoStream
  • Push button control of the replication process
  • Monitoring and alerts ensure replication is up to
    date

32
EchoStream and EchoCluster for AIX
  • Easy, Affordable and Innovative
  • CDP enables Any-Point-in-Time Recovery
  • Automated Role Swap for 24/7 Availability
  • Additional Benefits
  • Remove backup window
  • Enable software testing
  • Data mining or reporting
