Memory swept over him, and with chilling
knowledge of the thing in store for him today. He
lay still, eyes shut tight against reality, but
he could not shut out the whine of the storeroom
door, the footsteps coming out again a little
later, and finally the soft click of the gate.

Ranofer
Ranofer is the main character. His father
died when he was younger and now lives with his
uncle, Gebu, the stonecutter. Ranofer is a young
boy, who has black hair and consistent scares and
burns on his back from Gebu. Ranofer loves
gold-working, but Gebu made him go into the
stonecutting business. He is very obedient and
loyal to Gebu, but he must or he will be beaten,
which makes him miserable.
This image represents Ranofer being miserable at
Gebus. The teardrop represents that Ranofer
misses his father and his old job, gold working.

Gebu
Gebu is a largely constructed man. He
is widely respected at his job and at home,
because he is so powerful. Gebu has to earn money
to feed himself, which is why he stole the things
he did. Gebu punishes Ranofer for the slightest
mistake or incorrect gesture. He worked his way
to a master at work, which is where he met
Wenoman. Later, he asked Wenoman to steal things
for them to sell and become rich off of.
Gebu is always respected because he is large and
powerful. He is also angry more than half of the
time, so this image fits him perfectly.

Wenoman
Wenoman
Wenoman is Gebus accomplice. He helped Gebu
steal gold from the tombs of previous pharaohs.
This side kick had always made Ranofer and Heqet
uncomfortable. He is socially aloof, which means
he doesnt necessarily act normal around most
people. Wenoman is a mysterious person, who wears
black cloaks that make him look scary.
The picture to above shows a nervous person
(butterflies in your stomach). People became
nervous around Wenoman because of the way he
acted. He wasnt socially normal.

Heqet
Heqet is similar to the animated monkey,
Curious George because he is curious and is
always hopeful and smiling, even when he knows
things are not going well.
Heqet is a young boy, who works in
the gold-working business and tried to teach
Ranofer while he was stonecutting. Heqet was
constantly curious about Ranofers scars and
wounds. He was smart enough to know when Ranofer
needed a favor. He was willing to help Ranofer,
even if that meant trading their food. This young
boy helped spy on Gebu and he assisted Ranofer in
trying to discover more about his evil uncle.

Summary
The Golden Goblet, which is written by Eloise
Jarvis McGraw, takes place in ancient Egypt, but
there isnt a specific time period. Ranofer, the
main character, always wanted to be a great gold
worker like his father, but Gebu wouldn't
apprentice him and eventually forced him work as
a stonecutter. Ranofer follows orders and rarely
ignores Gebus horrid threats because they will
be put into action (beatings). Gebu is a
stonecutter. He is Ranofers uncle and is very
strict, but unjust, with him. Gebu played the
bad guy in the story and always seemed to make
Ranofer suspicious. Wenoman is Gebus partner in
crime. Heqet is Ranofers friend who helped him
sort out his suspicions of Gebu and Wenoman.

In the first chapter, Ranofer is daydreaming
while he is at the gold house, which Rekh owns.
Ranofer had just proudly handed in his last ingot
when he retrieves the sheep skin and wine he must
give to Gebu from Ibini each time the gift was
offered, even though Ranofer did not know why.
One day, Ranofer hears about the gold being
stolen and instinctively thinks of Ibini, which
ultimately leads him to think that he had been
also stealing the gold, but helping Gebu steal
it, by giving the sheepskin and wine to him.
Ranofer could not prove his assumption, but knew
in his heart that it was true. The next time
Ranofer is offered the gift, he lies and says
that Gebu doesnt want it and then Gebu beats him
when he learned what had happened. Ranofer needed
to tell someone about Ibini and Gebus theft, so
he told Heqet. Ranofer intended to ask Heqet to
tell Rekh about them and Heqet agreed. After
several days, nothing had changed at the workshop
of at Ranofers house, which made him indignant.
Later, Ibini was fired and was going to be hung,
this pleased Ranofer, but he wanted Gebu to be
paying for his terrible actions, too.

Soon after that, Gebu practically dragged
Ranofer to work with him the next morning.
Ranofer generously offered to leave and all he
needed in return was a donkey. That did not work,
though. Ranofer spent many days trying to learn
the ways of stone cutting. Heqet saw Ranofer one
day and they made plans to meet everyday, at
midday, in a grassy, tree-filled area. Heqet,
Ranofer, and their new friend the Ancient, who
had been living in the grassy area already,
talked about a variety of subjects, one being
Gebu. All of them new about the evil things Gebu
had done. Heqet said that the only way to stop
his menacing was to spy on him. For many weeks,
nothing significant happened during their
frequent spying. When something did occur, it was
not worthy of telling, which only excited Heqet
more. While Gebu was away, Ranofer snuck into his
secret room and looked through his things. He
found a beautiful goblet that had a date that
showed it way tremendously ancient and it had
belonged to a longed dead pharaoh. Gebu was a
tomb robber! Ranofer couldnt tell his fellow
friends so he decided to follow Wenoman and Gebu
the day they would go to the tombs again, aside
from the fact Ranofer was terrified to go into
the tomb.

caught? Or will Gebu and Wenoman notice that
Ranofer is following them? Do Heqet and the

Theme Slide
I think that the theme of this story is when you
know something is right, stick to it, and create
a plan to resolve the problem. I think that this
is true because Ranofer had to think of a plan to
rat out Gebu. He finally followed through with
his plan. It could also be say what you are
feeling and things you are unsure about because I
think that Heqet and the Ancient could have
helped Ranofer a lot when he was having a tough
time.
Hmm.. How can I solve my problem without getting
hurt?
