Title: Supporting practice assessors to take an interprofessional perspective

1
Supporting practice assessors to take an
interprofessional perspective
  • The Open University experience

2
Identifying a need in IPL provision
  • The OU recognises that IPL for students occurs
    predominantly
  • in two places.
  • Firstly, in course-based forums and discussions
    boards and
  • Secondly alongside practice assessors.
  • However, it is widely recognised that this
learning is not captured or articulated (Lloyd
    Jones et al 2007).

3
Meeting the need for IPL in practice
  • The Guide
  • Helps practice assessors set interprofessional
    objectives for learners, recognise
    interprofessional working and learning
opportunities in practice, and facilitates IPL
    in practice areas.
  • Makes IPL sustainable by embedding and making
explicit what is already happening as recognised
    IPL rather than unnoticed learning.

4
IPL Pocket Guide - research basis
  • Based on empirical practice-based research
    conducted in
  • 2008 (Kenward unpublished) that suggests students
    need -
  • the explicit articulation of IPL theory
  • to witness the application of theory to practice
    scenarios
  • the informal/formal exposure to varying
    professionals and
  • the role modelling of team working practices.
