Title: Concepts of Human Memory

1
Concepts of Human Memory
  • Thursday, 3/9/06

2
From last time
  • Dual Store Theory (component model)
  • Atkinson Shiffrin (1968)
  • STM, LTM, Sensory Memory
  • Divisions of LTM
  • Declarative (Episodic Semantic)
  • Nondeclarative (Procedural

3
  • Repetition Priming previous exposure to a
stimulus facilitates future processing of that
    stimulus.
  • Participants see doctor at study
  • Word-stem completion (DOC_)
  • Word fragment (D_C_R)
  • Anagram (ROCODT)
  • Perceptual-identification
  • Words presented at test for 30ms

4
Processing of Memory
  • Depth of Processing
  • (Craik Lockhart, 1972)
  • Memory is comprised of a single memory system
where the amount and quality of processing
    determines whether information is remembered.

5
  • Maintenance rehearsal passively repeating
    information.
  • Elaborative rehearsal actively comprehending
    and adding meaning to information.

6
Connectionism
  • Mental activity can be described and understood
as interconnected networks of simple units
    (nodes).

  • Basic Principles
  • Each node can have connections to many nodes.
  • Activating nodes simultaneously increases the
    connection weight between the nodes.
  • Much like a neuron, nodes or networks of nodes
can be activated, and then eventually return to a
    resting state.
  • Activation of a node is contingent upon
    surpassing a stimulation threshold.
  • Multiple layers of nodes likely exist.

10
Stages of Memory
  • Not a theory. Rather, a description of memory
    processes useful for understanding memory.
  • Compatible with most theories of memory.

11
  • Encoding attending to, interpreting, and adding
    meaning to incoming information.
  • Storage associating new information with
information already stored in memory. (i.e.
    filing)
  • Retrieval effectively accessing information
    stored in memory.

Have a great spring break!
