What is Gonorrhea, and Where is it?

• Gonorrhea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
• It is Found in
• the cervix (opening to the womb),
• uterus, and fallopian tubes
• urethra
• mouth, throat, eyes, and anus.

How common is it?

• As of 2006
• CDC estimates 700,000 new U.S. cases per year
• CDC actually reported 358,366 cases

How do you get it?

• Gonorrhea is spread through contact with
• Sex Organs
• Ejaculation does not have to occur.
• Child Birth
• You can get it again after you have been treated.

Who is at Risk?

• Any sexually active person can be infected with
  gonorrhea.
• Highest Occurrences (U.S.)
• sexually active teenagers
• young adults
• African Americans

Symptoms for Men?

• men with gonorrhea may have no symptoms at all.
• Anywhere between 2-30 days to appear.
• Symptoms and signs include
• burning sensation when urinating,
• white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis.
  
• painful or swollen testicles.

Symptoms in Women?

• Often mild and mistaken for a bladder or vaginal
  infection.
• a painful or burning sensation when urinating
• increased vaginal discharge
• vaginal bleeding between periods.

Diagnosis and Treatment

• Chlamydia is diagnosed by a urine or tissue
  sample.
• Luckily, it can be treated with antibiotics.
