Title: Solving Algebraic Equations and Inequalities

1
Solving Algebraic Equations and Inequalities
SAMPLE
  • By Stacey Heller
  • Jamestown Middle School
  • Guilford County, NC

2
SOLVING ALGEBRAIC EQUATIONS
  • Students will choose problems from the Problem
    Bank.
  • For example
  • p 3 5

3
SOLVING ALGEBRAIC EQUATIONS
  • Students will then explain HOW to solve that
    equation.
  • Using the subtraction property of equality,
subtract 3 from each side of the equation
  • p 3 3 5 - 3

4
SOLVING ALGEBRAIC EQUATIONS
Next, simplify the equation by subtracting 3 from
3, and 3 from 5 p 3 3 5 3 (Subtraction
Property of Equality) p 0 2
(Simplifying/Identity Property of Addition) p
2 (Solution)
5
SOLVING ALGEBRAIC INEQUALITIES
  • Students will continue in the same vain through
the next few slides, using inequalities from the
    Problem Bank.

6
SOLVING ALGEBRAIC EQUATIONS and INEQUALITIES
  • In the next few slides, students will
  • Write a word problem, an algebraic equation to go
with it, and solve the equation.
  • Write a word problem, an algebraic inequality to
go with it, and solve the inequality.
  • Write 2 word problems (1 equation and 1
inequality) to be solved by classmates/audience.

7
POWER POINT PROJECT
  • Students need to keep in mind that
  • Directions (text) should be written out clearly
    (thats the objective)
  • Text should be easy to read from the appropriate
    display location (monitor, TV, etc.)
  • Project should include appropriate graphics,
animation, sounds, fonts, and colors and should
    be creative!

Good luck with your class
  • Enjoy your students presentations
  • Let your students be creative
  • Enjoy the fact that you helped them reach this
    level of understanding
