2Workshop Purposes
- To provide an overview of technology product
(i.e., ePortfolio) all teacher education
candidates must produce to meet NC technology
competencies - To provide initial assistance as you get started
preparing your ePortfolio

4Grade 2 Students will
- Use input devices (e.g., mouse, keyboard, remote
control) and output devices (e.g., monitor,
printer) to successfully operate computers, VCRs,
audiotapes, and other technologies. - Use a variety of media and technology resources
for directed and independent learning activities.
- Communicate about technology using
developmentally appropriate and accurate
terminology. - Use developmentally appropriate multimedia
resources (e.g., interactive books, educational
software, elementary multimedia encyclopedias) to
support learning. - Work cooperatively and collaboratively with
peers, family members, and others when using
technology in the classroom. - Demonstrate positive social and ethical behaviors
when using technology. - Practice responsible use of technology systems
and software. - Create developmentally appropriate multimedia
products with support from teachers, family

- Use keyboards and other common input and output
devices (including adaptive devices when
necessary) efficiently and effectively. - Discuss common uses of technology in daily life
and the advantages and disadvantages those uses
provide. - Discuss basic issues related to responsible use
of technology and information and describe
personal consequences of inappropriate use. - Use general purpose productivity tools and
peripherals to support personal productivity,
remediate skill deficits, and facilitate learning
throughout the curriculum. - Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring,
presentation, Web tools, digital cameras,
scanners) for individual and collaborative
writing, communication, and publishing activities
to create knowledge products for audiences inside
and outside the classroom. - Use telecommunications efficiently to access
remote information, communicate with others in
support of direct and independent learning, and
pursue personal interests. - Use telecommunications and online resources
(e.g., e-mail, online discussions, Web
environments) to participate in collaborative
problem-solving activities for the purpose of
developing solutions or products for audiences
inside and outside the classroom. - Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data
collection probes, videos, educational software)
for problem solving, self-directed learning, and
extended learning activities. - Determine which technology is useful and select
the appropriate tool(s) and technology resources

- Apply strategies for identifying and solving
routine hardware and software problems that occur
during everyday use. - Demonstrate knowledge of current changes in
information technologies and the effect those
changes have on the workplace and society. - Exhibit legal and ethical behaviors when using
information and technology, and discuss
consequences of misuse. - Use content-specific tools, software, and
simulations (e.g., environmental probes, graphing
calculators, exploratory environments, Web tools)
to support learning and research. - Apply productivity/multimedia tools and
peripherals to support personal productivity,
group collaboration, and learning throughout the
curriculum. - Design, develop, publish, and present products
(e.g., Web pages, videotapes) using technology
resources that demonstrate and communicate
curriculum concepts to audiences inside and
outside the classroom. - Collaborate with peers, experts, and others using
telecommunications and collaborative tools to
investigate curriculum-related problems, issues,
and information, and to develop solutions or
products for audiences inside and outside the
classroom. - Select and use appropriate tools and technology
resources to accomplish a variety of tasks and

- It introduces you to the viewer.
- It contains artifacts (electronic products),
produced while in the UNC Charlotte teacher
education program. - It shows the diversity of your field experiences.
- It showcases your technology expertise.
- You will complete a set of 10 activities to meet
state technology competencies. - It verifies that you meet NC Technology Standards
for initially licensed teachers.
10Who has to create an ePortfolio?
- Every candidate admitted to the UNC Charlotte
Teacher Education Program on or after August 1,
2003 and seeking an initial teaching licensure
must complete an ePortfolio to demonstrate
proficiency with technology and to be eligible
for an initial license in North Carolina.
11When will my ePortfolio be evaluated?
- In the course where the requirement is created
(many artifacts come from courses) - When you meet with your advisor (if the
activities were completed independently) - Before admission to Graduate Internship or
Student Teaching (copy of Technology Competencies
Verification form must be attached to
application) - At end of Graduate Internship or Student Teaching
as a requirement for licensure (final copy of
Technology Competencies Verification form must be
attached to licensure application)
12What do I need in order to make an ePortfolio?
- A computer
- Knowledge of basic computer skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including how to
create tables - The entire ePortfolio is created in MS Word
- What if I do not have Microsoft Office?

- Technology-specific independent activities
13Basic Assumptions
- That you can
- organize digital and paper documents
- create digital documents in Word, Excel and
PowerPoint - cut and paste within and between documents
- create hyperlinks
- format a document fonts, color, size, bold,
etc. - handle files in different locations
- state NC technology expectations for teachers
- If you cannot do these things, you need to take a
basic technology course prior to completing this
ePortfolio.

- A combination of independent activities and
course requirements. - A set of 10 independent activities has been
prepared for candidates to help you meet the NC
Technology Standards for Teachers. - Some work samples will be created during courses
within your program.

- As of August 1, 2005 you have a choice about what
type ePortfolio you will create - The requirements are the same for both.
- ePortfolio Template is 1.89 MB.
16Web-Based ePortfolio
- Created or uploaded on campus
- Available from any location
- Does not require additional resources such as CD
burners and flash drives - Easy for Professors to access and check
- University backs it up
17Portable ePortfolio (PeP)
- Must be kept in one location
- Must have the capability to burn a CD or use a
USB Flash Drive - Must supply a copy of entire ePortfolio to
advisor or instructor each time it needs to be
checked - Must back it up often computer crashes are no
excuse

- Every document for your ePortfolio should be
stored in the public_html folder.
Store all of youractivity documents(work
products) in the artifacts folder.
Store all of yourimages photosin this folder.
Dont touch.
These are the six webpages (HTML documents) for
your ePortfolio. In order to modify/change informa
tion, you need to open them with Word.

Steps for making a hyperlink to a document
- Highlight the text
- Keep your mouse pointer on the highlight
- Right click and select Hyperlink
- Select Existing File or Web Page and Current
Folder - Double click on the artifacts folder
- Select/highlight the document you want to make a
hyperlink to - Click OK
- The text will change color and have an underline
(meaning it has been hyperlinked)
