Title: CH' 474

1
CH. 47-4
  • Cycles within Ecosystems

2
Biogeochemical Cycles
  • Cycle- process that describes how materials can
    be conserved or re-used again.
  • Ex. Recycling of cans, bottles, paper
  • Bio- life
  • Geo- earth
  • Chemical- complex compounds made up of atoms

3
Biogeochemical Cycles
  • Materials including water(H2O),
    nitrogen(N2),Oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide
    (CO2), are recycled through ecosystems
  • Some other chemicals ammonia (NH3), nitrate
    (NO3)
  • Burning fossil fuels is upsetting to carbon cycle
and warming the atmosphere- greenhouse effect

4
Biogeochemical Cycles
  • Describes how nutrients are recyceld throught
biological systems (in living organisms) and
    through the earth
  • Ex. Water Cycle, Carbon and Oxygen Cycle, and
    Nitrogen Cycle

5
Nutrient Cycle
  • Nutrients circulate through ecosystem.
  • Liken and Bormann- nutrients dont leave
    ecosystem.
  • Producers keep nutrients- if producers lost then
    nutrients would leave.

6
Nitrogen Cycle
  • Organisms must have nitrogen to make proteins.
  • Living things cant use nitrogen gas N2 because
    strong bond except bacteria
  • Nitrogen fixing bacteria break N2 bond and make
    ammonia (NH3) or nitrate (NO3).

7
Nitrogen Cycle
  • Nitrogen fixers live in plant roots. Ammonia is
    taken up by plants.
  • Animals eat plants to get nitrogen. (NH3)
  • Nitrogen returned to soil by animal waste or
  • Decomposers return nitrogen back to soil when
    animal or plant dies.(NH3)

8
Nitrogen Cycle
  • Nitrification- NH3 is converted to NO3
  • The NO3 is converted to N2 by denitrification
    from bacteria
  • Complete cycle

9
Water Cycle
  • Involves phase changes (solid, liquid, and gas)
  • Water is never lost. (kept/ Conserved within
    ecosystem)

10
Water Cycle
  • Water most important abiotic component.
  • Water is evaporated from ocean and brought to
forest, where it condenses on plants.
  • It will run off back to ocean if no plants to
    stop it.

11
Carbon Cycle
  • Carbon dioxide in air, plants use during
    photosynthesis.
  • Consumers eat plants and get carbon
  • Carbon dioxide given off by animals and plants
    returns to air (Cellular Respiration)
  • Plants contain carbon which can only be put back
    by burning.
  • Write equation for Photosynthesis and Respiration

12
Greenhouse effect
  • Fossil Fuels contain carbon from plants. When too
much fossil fuel is burned then to much carbon
    dioxide is put in atm.
  • CO2 traps heat and heats planet.

13
Oxygen Cycle
  • Describe the oxygen cycle which is much like the
    carbon cycle.
  • They are the same.

14
Concept Map
  • Develop a concept map for each cycle
  • Then show how each cycle effects or leads to the
    next cycle.
  • Groups of 3
