• NC Promotion and Introduction of Integrated
  Regional Studies (IRS) into their Science Plan
• Until what extent NCs have influence on their
  Academy of Sciences for IRS?
• The representativeness of the NC and connectivity
  with the Scientific Community doing Global Change
  Research is very unequal
• Towards the end of the 1990s the effectivity of
  many the NCs usually was decreasing
• There is not much representation of the Global
  Change research areas in the Academy of Sciences
• There are some exceptions in East Asia (Russia,
  Mongolia, China and Korea) inn organizing
  workshops for settiing IRS

• The role of IGBP sharing experineces in
  establishing succesful IRS stories
• The need for an structure within IGBP to foster
  the establishment of IRS initiatives. For
  example BAHC-LBA
• The more active role of IGBP in the connectivity
  to establish IRS initiatives. For example setting
  a task force for IRS

• New IRS initiative The Andes initiative going
  beyong the Tropical Andes
• There is already a big interest within the
  scientific community
• There are many isolated stories that need to be
  integrated

• Strategy on how to define a scientific question
  of interest to a region
• Two examples A Global Change question with
  important societal impacts
• LBA Amazon deforestation (A land use-problem
  driven)
• Monsoon, Land Use Population in Monsoon Asia (A
  physical climate driven area)

• Recomendation An open data policy from the
  begining. This should be a must for a succesful
  Integrated Regional Study
