• Postpartum hospital stays average only 24 to 48
  hours.
• Shorter maternity stays yield moms who are tired,
  physiologically unstable, and unsure of how to
  care for themselves and their newborns
• Signs of illness in newborns often are very
  subtle, and parents may not realize their infant
  is sick
• Heart defects and jaundice may not be apparent
  until 72 hours of age
