Title: Are you Swamped Be a Delegator

1
Are you Swamped? Be a Delegator!
  • Design Team
  • Donna Ahlrich, Charmaine Broe-Mackenzie, Jim
Brown, Tiffany Davis, Jennifer Duncan, and Emily
    Nichols

2
Problem
  • The school library media specialist feels
overwhelmed by the duties of teaching information
literacy skills, being an information specialist,
and working as an instructional consultant.
Volunteers want to help, but are not fully
utilized by the media specialist. If the media
specialist continues to try to micro-manage the
media center, fatigue and burn-out are
    inevitable.

3
Goals
  • The learner will understand the purpose,
    importance and benefit of delegation.
  • The learner will identify duties that can be
    delegated to volunteers.

4
Objective
  • Given time to reflect after the brainstorming
session and the group discussion in the classroom
setting, the learner will list and identify at
least 2-4 duties that can be delegated to other
    individuals.

5
Learner Analysis
  • Adult learners
  • Post-Graduate education
  • Highly motivated
  • Capable of abstract thinking
  • High language and communication skills
  • All participants possess basic knowledge of the
    media center and its procedures
  • All participants have experience working or
    volunteering in the media center.

6
Assessment
  • Determine if the learner can list and identify
2-4 duties that can be delegated.
  • Determine whether the learners came away from the
lesson with an appreciation for the benefits of
    delegating duties to volunteers.
  • Determine whether the learners are reflecting on
additional duties to add to the distributed list.

7
Lesson Development
  • Attention will be gained through a brainstorming
and sorting activity using post-it notes.
  • Learners will be asked to consider which of the
brainstormed tasks should be delegated or
    retained.
  • A door prize will be awarded to the participant
    with the most delegated tasks.
  • The instructor will lead a group discussion
    concerning the placement of tasks.
  • A Power Point presentation showing the group
mascot, Della-the-Gator will be shown to
    re-motivate.
  • Hand-outs will be given to promote transfer.

8
Hand-Outs Provided
  • A cover sheet with workshop theme
  • A list of media center duties and
    responsibilities
  • Jobs for possible delegation list
  • Jobs suggested for retention by Media Specialist
  • Copy of the Library Bill of Rights
  • Copy of AUP for volunteers

9
Implementation
  • This instruction took place in room 1910 at the
    Gwinnett University Center.
  • The instructors had access to a white board,
laptop with internet access, and projection
    equipment.

10
Evaluation
  • Each learner will participate in a one-on-one
interview after the lesson takes place. This
interview will help the instructors evaluate the
lesson effectiveness and determine what worked
    and what did not.

11
Next Steps
  • The interview results were discussed and
lesson revisions were made based on the feedback.
    Some possible changes include
  • Instructor modeling of task sorting activity.
  • Written assessment for learners.
