Our Government

Canada has a Parliamentary Democracy
  • Democratic form of government in which the party
with the greatest representation in the
    parliament (legislature) forms the government,
    its leader becoming prime minister.
  • The parties in the minority serve in opposition
to the majority and have the duty to challenge it
    regularly.
  • The prime minister may be removed from power
whenever he loses the confidence of a majority of
the ruling party or of the parliament.
  • Parliamentary democracy originated in Britain.

The Election Process
10
There are many political parties in Canada.
  • Each party has a candidate running in each
    riding.
  • Each party has a leader, who would become Prime
Minister if his/her party becomes the governing
    party.

11
  • Canada is divided into 308 ridings
    (constituencies)
  • One person is elected in each riding to become
the Member of Parliament to represent that area.

12
After the election, the ballots are counted.
  • The winner in each riding goes to Ottawa to be a
Member of Parliament. He/She represents his/her
riding in the House of Commons.
  • The party that won the most seats becomes the
governing party. Their leader becomes the Prime
    Minister of Canada.
