2Canada has a Parliamentary Democracy
- Democratic form of government in which the party
with the greatest representation in the
parliament (legislature) forms the government,
its leader becoming prime minister. - The parties in the minority serve in opposition
to the majority and have the duty to challenge it
regularly. - The prime minister may be removed from power
whenever he loses the confidence of a majority of
the ruling party or of the parliament. - Parliamentary democracy originated in Britain.

- Federal (all of Canada)
- Provincial and Territorial (the province or
territory) - Municipal (the local area, municipality)

government work together to make and enact laws - The judicial branch enforces laws.

8The Federal Cabinet
- The cabinet is appointed by the Prime Minister
from the MPs in the House of Commons. - Each are responsible for a portfolio.
9The Election Process
10There are many political parties in Canada.
- Each party has a candidate running in each
riding. - Each party has a leader, who would become Prime
Minister if his/her party becomes the governing
party.
11- Canada is divided into 308 ridings
(constituencies) - One person is elected in each riding to become
the Member of Parliament to represent that area.
12After the election, the ballots are counted.
- The winner in each riding goes to Ottawa to be a
Member of Parliament. He/She represents his/her
riding in the House of Commons. - The party that won the most seats becomes the
governing party. Their leader becomes the Prime
Minister of Canada.
13The House of Commons
143- Cabinet Minister. A member of the Cabinet
appointed by the Governor General on the advice
of the Prime Minister.
4- Opposition Party.
6- Leader of the Official Opposition. The leader
of the party with the second largest membership
in the House of Commons.
5- Prime Minister. The Head of Government, who is
the leader of the party having the greatest
number of seats in the House of Commons.
