Some general tips
Delegate
Involve parents
Analysis
Player Confidence
Key Objective
Fun
  • ask someone to run the warm ups for a few weeks
to allow you to get ready for the next part of
    the session
  • ask one parent to look after drinks bottles,
tackle shields, collecting cones, marking out
    pitches etc
  • there may be some great organisers or
communicators amongst the parent group ask for
help most cant wait to be asked
  • consider standing at different parts of the
pitch to watch a game or drill (eg from behind
    the try line)
  • ask a parent to video the game and review it
later with a pen and paper remember child
    protection issues
  • plan the next session whilst you still remember
the areas fir development from the last session
  • try to make it fun! Always!
  • Children love games - think of new games which
can be played to develop skills (keep the laws
    simple though)
  • let the children know that you are enjoying it -
    smile
  • the British psyche seems to be able to identify
negatives very easily work hard at identifying
the positives and give the players confidence
that they are doing things right
  • ask them questions and value their answers
  • team talks should accentuate the positives and
    encourage them
  • think of little measures of achievement in tough
games (first five minutes no missed tackles)
  • parents want to be involved, but may need to be
    asked
  • once involved that gives the players
    encouragement
  • it gives the team another voice
  • it gives you another pair of eyes on the
    training ground
  • team spirit is built
  • consider child protection issues
  • winning is NOT the objective
  • the objective is to build the enjoyment, skills
    and understanding of rugby
  • over time, results will follow

Festivals
  • Kit
  • Make sure you have your kit clean and dry
  • KRFC shirt
  • Spare T-shirt for wearing after games to allow
    KRFC shirt to dry
  • Tracksuit (with name in it)
  • Gum shield
  • Scrum hat / body padding
  • Boots trainers to change into if wet
  • Socks (plus spare pair if wet)
  • Warm cloths
  • Appropriate hat if sunny/wet
  • Coat / waterproofs
  • Umbrella
  • Kit bag (name in it)

Festivals
Food Donts Whilst sweets give energy, eating
them between games can cause the children to run
around and waste their energy. Fatty foods, such
as crisps and chocolate will slow them down and
reduce performance. Avoid fizzy drinks, they
bloat players and slow performance.
  • Food Dos
  • It is essential that to get the best out of the
team they have a good breakfast try to eat
    cereals with whole grains eg
  • porridge,
  • Shredded Wheat,
  • Weetabix.
  • Complex carbohydrates like this provide long term
fuel this will be needed for a festival.
  • Bring sandwiches on wholemeal or granary bread.
  • Fruit give good instant energy and bananas in
particular help to replace some of the minerals
lost when sweating during games (watch the tennis
    players).
  • Have lots of water or squash. Players should keep
hydrated even in cool weather. Loss of
concentration and tiredness increase as players
    lose liquids.

8
Match Days
  • Food
  • See points on Festivals.
  • Make sure that you have a good breakfast before
    coming to training
  • Cereals with whole grains are good sources of
complex carbohydrates which will keep you going
for the whole time training and playing. Eg
  • porridge,
  • Shredded Wheat,
  • Weetabix.

9
Match Days
  • Kit
  • Make sure your kit is clean and looks smart. It
is important to look and feel a team. This has
    an impact on the opposition.
  • Please wear
  • your club track suit please dont wear it
for training we want them to look smart.
Training in them will get them ripped and make
    them and us look tatty.
  • club shirt
  • boots (clean)
  • gum-shield
  • scrum hat and body pads if you have them

10
Match Days
  • Behaviour
  • Rugby is a which we want you to enjoy and have
    fun playing it.
  • It is essential however, that we respect the
players, coaches and referees of all teams.
  • Never challenge a referees decision the Captain
on the day may politely enquire why a decision
    has been made.
  • Be polite to the opposition.
  • After the game we give three cheers to the
opposition, led by the Captain. Then form a
tunnel at the side of the pitch and clap them
    off.
  • Never gloat when you win.
  • Never get angry about a defeat simply work out
how you can do better next time.

  • Drill
  • Set up an L-shaped grid with cones
  • Have players in lines behind cones
  • Player 1 runs out in straight line, passes to two
    etc to end man
  • 4 pops to 5 and that line goes
  • Players 1 to 4 run in behind where players 5 to 8
started, but change relative position in line
  • Increase the speed
  • I have found calling 2 steps pass an effective
way to get them to think about what they are to
    achieve
  • Objectives
  • to warm up for handling the ball
  • to encourage straight running
  • to encourage passing at pace
  • to encourage sympathy of pass
  • to encourage appropriate support running
  • Drill - extensions
  • Bring in miss passes
  • Bring in miss and pop back inside
  • Have coaches watching each side for
    straightness of run
  • Coaches increase pressure on players by stepping
    into the grid
  • Key skills
  • Timing of pass
  • Sympathy of pass
  • Depth of support runner
  • Fast hands
  • Attacking the ball as receiver (rather than
    drifting away from it)

13
Auckland grid

1
  • Drill
  • Across a square players run across the diagonal
  • Pop pass to opposite player
  • Avoid contact in the middle of the grid
  • Sympathy of pass

2
3
  • Drill - extensions
  • Receiving runners go as opposite player receives
the ball this speeds up action and means
    avoidance is required
  • Player one place ball on the ground 2 metres from
player 3, who picks up (long stride body
    position across the grid)
  • Player passes clockwise, runs anti-clockwise
    awareness
  • Increase number of balls in grid
  • Key skills
  • Sympathy of pass
  • Fast hands
  • Attacking the ball as receiver
  • Awareness and avoidance

  • Drill
  • Narrow channel (vary with number of players doing
    drill)
  • Players run up
  • Coach pops ball to player one who passes a flat
    pass to two
  • Player two passes to second coach
  • Objective is to keep the ball on a flat plain
    between the two coaches
  • Repeat with next coaches but start at the other
    side
  • Players sprint around end cones and back to start
  • Objectives
  • to warm up for handling the ball
  • to encourage straight running
  • to encourage passing at pace
  • to encourage a flat pass
  • Drill - extensions
  • One player only
  • Add a 3rd player
  • Key skills
  • Speed of pass

  • Drill
  • Receiver are numbered 1,2 or 3 on a cone (more
if necessary) with another cone 5 metres away
    opposite
  • Passer stands 5 metres away in line with cones
  • Coach calls 1,2 or 3
  • Passer runs to relevant cone and passes ball to
    relevant player
  • Receiver catches pass and runs out to replace the
ball on cone and runs back to original position
  • Repeat several times
  • Swap passer

  • Objectives
  • to warm up for rucking and ball-winning
  • to encourage all players, forwards and backs to
be ball winners when there first
  • to encourage expansive play
  • Drill
  • Coach/parent/player with tackle shield steps back
    5-10m
  • Player 1 runs forwards attacking coach, goes to
    ground as support arives
  • 2 support players create ruck and protect player
    / ball
  • 4th player acts as scrum half, other players pass
along line to end then hit next coach
  • First two players provide support and set up
ruck, next acts as scrum half
  • The rest line up outside and pass down the line
  • Drill-extensions
  • Increase numbers to say 8 or 9 (if more do more
    than one group)
  • If more than 6 in a group, have 3rd support
player bind behind first two thus creating a more
solid share and providing distance from the
offside line to help scrum half get the ball away
  • Have an extra player next to the coach with the
shield to act as a defender trying to pick up
the ball from the ground and who must be rucked
    out
  • Key skills
  • Body position in rucking
  • First players responsibility to win the ball
  • Speed of thought and passing to transfer ball in
    right direction
  • Reacting appropriately to the position in which
    the player finds himself

  • Drill
  • Even sides touch. Ball transfers to the
    opposition
  • Knock on
  • Any pass other than flat pass
  • Player into touch
  • Reset after a touch
  • This can be used for more experienced tag players
as they learn the need for continuity
  • Objectives
  • to encourage players to use the flat pass
  • To encourage players to create interesting
running lines to be able to take the
    flat pass
  • break the defensive line by pace onto the ball

  • to encourage players to make space for their
    team-mates
  • to encourage support running by proving support
    players get the ball
  • Drill

  • Attacker moves forward and cuts back towards
defender, thus committing him to the tackles /
    tag and leaving a space
  • Attacker passes / off-loads to support player who
    repeats
  • After pass players looking to get in support for
    next opportunity
  • Turn around to pass off the other hand and
    run-through again
  • Drill - extensions
  • Have defenders in the middle of a narrow (5-10m)
    channel support either side
  • do it as a competition between the two sides
how many without dropping the ball out of 5
    attempts

  • Drill
  • Narrow channel
  • Decide whether to attack A, B or C (maybe a week
tackler, slow forward etc) B selected above
  • Coach passes ball to attacker 1 1 or 2 attacks
player B fast feet draws him out of position
(example above 1 attacks B player 2 fixes
defender C by running hard towards him and
    thereby creates a space
  • If the player does not move to the attacker, then
break through and attack defenders behind if he
moves, pop ball into the space vacated by
defender to support runners coming from deep
  • Move on to second set of defenders again create
space and pop to support runners coming from deep
  • Objectives
  • to have two waves of attack at all times
  • by doing this we create 2 v 1 situations
  • to assess the situation and make decisions
    accurately and quickly
  • to fix the defence (above no 2 makes defender C
believe he is going to get the ball and attack
    him
  • Drill - extensions
  • Start attackers and defender from outside the
grid to further simulate 2nd phase rugby
  • Add more attackers / defenders
  • Widen / narrow size of channel

  • Drill
  • Let attackers have 2 attempts at scoring
  • Swap defenders to attackers let them have 2
    attacks
  • Break down the play and ask them what has worked
    and what has not
  • Answers
  • Fixing defenders (eg scissor, decoy runners,
    step, loop, dummy)
  • Consider runners and handlers runners from
    deep, changing angles
  • Using space before defenders do (eg attack fast
    and chip thru)
  • Using width of pitch
  • Go back to point one above have three attempts
if play breaks down, give ball to attackers to
    start again
  • If necessary, break down to walking pace to
demonstrate how the move creates space
  • Assist by varying the pace at which defenders
    come up build the pressure
  • Break down into 2 v 2, then build back up
  • Objectives
  • to encourage players to use the space
  • To encourage players to create more space
  • space is before the defenders, between the
defenders, outside the defenders, behind the
    defenders
  • stretch the defence, deceive the defence

  • Attackers attack when there is a tackle (no 3
on 3 in example above) create a quick ruck with
    one more attacker
  • Defenders allow attackers to have the ball
  • Defence put in a guard both sides of the ruck
  • Guard must shout Guard and put up hand (look at
    their body positions)
  • Attackers then attack the spaces
  • Coach asks where is the space? If they are not
    finding it
  • Consider a forfeit if the guard allows the scrum
half to step between them and the ruck
  • Objectives
  • to encourage players to use the space
  • To encourage players to create more space
  • to focus defenders on their defence positions
  • Kit

  • Defending side chase
  • Other members of the back three get back to
    support
  • Wingers look to change angle, with a scissor
  • Increase pressure by having chasers for the kick
  • Objectives

  • change direction of the attack to evade chasers
  • Key skills
  • Catching the high ball
  • Working as a pendulum defence for back three
  • Look to change the angle of attack

  • simulate wider spaces available to back three
  • Drill
  • Channel 20m by 30m
  • 2 defenders run around to back of grid, attackers
    to front of grid
  • Because its wider, players need to use width to
    stretch defence
  • Pass to strike runner who attacks from depth
  • Try long pass from 1 to 2 then pop back inside to
    3 from depth
  • Try 2 as a decoy, 1 cuts to create opportunity to
    scissor etc
  • Key skills
  • Running from depth
  • Changing angle of run to make a gap

  • Support players must adjust distance and react to
    decision of 2nd player.
  • Receiver from ruck, or pass becomes player 1,
runs 5m, places ball, turns and retires etc
  • Objectives
  • to keep momentum of attack
  • to encourage players to consider options on how
best to address a potential contact situation
