River Watershed, IL
- Introduction
- There has been rapid growth in the use of the
Internet, computer-based mapping, and GIS - The Lower Fox River Watershed (LFRW) is
multipurpose environmental system (1,720 square
miles in IL. Population 450,000) - Secondary data sources the Census Bureau, United
States Geological Survey (USGS), Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) on Water, energy, power,
clean air, plant and animal habitat, recreation,
and aesthetics.
6Digital Environmental Atlas Resources Lower Fox
River Watershed, IL
- Objectives
- Assemble environmental digital data for the
preparation of a digital environmental atlas of
the Lower Fox River Watershed, - Demonstrate how one can use a digital Atlas data
from secondary sources of information at the
watershed and county level, and - Build a database as a resource for developing
examples for teaching GIS, environmental problem
solving, students GIS projects and future
environmental project development
7Digital Environmental Atlas Resources Lower Fox
River Watershed, IL
- Literature review
- Some typical examples of digital atlas are
available (Berlin Environmental Digital Atlas,
2006 BG Mapping, 2005 Bowen, 2006 California
Conservation Atlas, 2006 Canadian County Atlas
Project, 199 Idaho Digital Atlas, 2000 Indiana
spatial data portal, 2006 Globe Project 2006
IUCN, 2003 USGS, 2006 Terradata, 2006).
8Digital Environmental Atlas Resources Lower Fox
River Watershed, IL
- Literature review
- Some atlases ( E.g. the Idaho Digital Atlas) were
intended for teaching and learning but often too
restrictive - Standard procedures for the accuracy of the data
are percent correctly classified, user accuracy,
producer accuracy, and Kappa Statistics (Longley,
et al, 2002). - Inclusion of an example of data quality
assessment would caution users, students learners
about the credibility of metadata and data
quality.
9Digital Environmental Atlas Resources Lower Fox
River Watershed, IL
- Method
- Using ARCGIS9.1 software that is already
available at Roosevelt Lower Fox River Watershed
(LFRW) boundaries was delineated. - Kane County chosen as a pilot for the study
county. - Data were identified from the Internet search 1.
Green Mapping (http//www.greenmapping.org/), 2.
American Fact Finder (http//factfinder.census.gov
/home/saff/main.html?_langen ), 3. Illinois
River Decision Support System (http//ilrdss.sws.u
iuc.edu/maps/maps_results.asp?ws3sortdata )
and 4. Chicago Region GIS and Data Catalog
(http//www.cagis.uic.edu/Catalog/).
10Digital Environmental Atlas Resources Lower Fox
River Watershed, IL
- Method
- Extensive Internet search of websites
- The human dimension part of the environment was
included from the Bureau of Census data. - The data was georeferenced to a common coordinate
system using Geographic Projection System(GCS)
North American HARN 1983 and Projected Coordinate
System (PCS) North American Datum NAD 1983 HARN
State Plane Illinois East FIPS 1201 . - Meta data description is also included in order
to inform user of the quality of the data.
Several themes were assembled for the Lower fox
watershed and Kane County. - The digital data collected from the secondary
sources was used to develop a Web Site
(http//faculty.roosevelt.edu/achet/dear.htm) .
The Web Site is organized in two main parts 1.
Data resources and 2. Data view and applications.
The data resources are organized into 1. Download
data, 2. Metadata sources and 3. Access free
data. The data resources section has a direct
link too the data in the Roosevelt GIS server.
There is also an extensive list of Internet
resources in this section. The data view and
applications is grouped into Lower Fox River
Watershed (LFRW) data view and Open-ended GIS
applications for teaching and learning. In the
LFRW data view is organized into 1. Kane County,
2. The LFRW and GIS applications data, and other
resources.

- Results and Discussion
- The results of the summer research are presented
in the form of a webpage (http//faculty.roosevelt
.edu/achet/dear.htm ). - The project is a byproduct GIS-database to be
inputted to the ARCGIS-GIS Server at Roosevelt - The database has a potential to grow further as a
part of the student research projects and future
grant proposal development. - This project is an ongoing learning project.
ArcGIS software is needed for developing
applications. The output of the project is a
website and a database being integrated in W
drive in the GIS server at Roosevelt.

- Future Directions
- To institutionalize as a GIS data-base for Lower
Fox River Watershed in Roosevelt University - Canned projects in teaching GIS
- Developing grant research proposal in watershed
management. - With the support of a professional web
programmer, the look, and presentation of the
atlas can be improved. - Both guided and independent projects are possible
including projects ranging from simple to complex
projects. - Students and learners are advised to keep
checking in at the Atlas Website

28Summary and Conclusions
- An integrated Model was developed using available
Know-how, C programming, RS and GIS and readily
available information. - Timber harvesting significantly impacts peak and
mean daily flow of streamflow at watershed,
sub-basin and basin level in descending order.
Results differ for two approaches. - Harvest Criteria Basin Sub-basin Watershed HC
- 46. 9 million m3 Peak 44 to 51 34 to 41
55 to 141 M/H - 34.6 million m3 Peak 9 to 10 7 to 9 16
to 18 M/H - 46. 9 million MDF 30 to 47, 22 to 36 77 to
137 M/H - 34.6 million m3 MDF 7 to 10 5 to 8 14 to
20 M/H - Reforestation reduced impact on peak and mean
daily flow in medium and high hydrologic
conditions. - The impact on timing to peak was more governed by
modeling approach and hydrologic condition than
timber harvest options. - UTOOLS Visualization was useful in identifying
additional harvest criteria and communicating
model results.

39What percentage of increase in income level after
the transit system development is needed in order
to make it significantly different from the
increase in property value or income before the
transit system development.
40In order to conclude that the impact of transit
system is significantly different, there must be
a 20 to 25 increase in income

48 Watershed Management in the Himalayas
A watershed management framework for mountain
areas based on lessons from 25 years of
experience in watershed management in Nepal using
ecosystem-based approach, participatory watershed
management, a program planning matrix. The
framework was applied to watershed planning in
the Chure Region to compare the framework-based
planning with conventional planning procedures.
The study found that an integrated watershed
management framework (IWMF) approach performed
better than the conventional planning approach of
DSCWM.
