How does science affect Hurricanes?
4
Meterology
  • Includes
  • Clouds Precipitation
  • Air Masses and Fronts
  • Weather Forecasting

5
Clouds Precipitation
  • A cloud is made up of
  • water droplets and ice crystals
  • They come in all shapes and sizes.

6
Air Masses
  • An air mass is
  • a large body of air
  • that has similar temperature
  • and moisture properties throughout

7
Water Currents
  • Surface Currents
  • These waters make up 10 of the of the ocean.
  • Deep Water Currents -
  • These waters make up 90 of the ocean.

8
What does Meteorology include?

11
Correct
  • You got the question correct!

12
Tracking
There are two main ways to track hurricanes
13
Methods of Tracking Weather
  • Two main types
  • Persistence Method
  • Trends Method
  • http//ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/guides/mtr/fcst/
    mth/trnd.rxml

14
Persistence Method
  • the simplest way of producing a forecast.
  • Assumes that the forecast will NOT change.

15
For Example
  • If it is sunny and 87 degrees today,
  • the persistence method predicts that it will be
    sunny and 87 degrees tomorrow.
  • If two inches of rain fell today,
  • the persistence method would predict two inches
    of rain for tomorrow.

16
Trends Method
  • determining the speed and direction of
  • movement for fronts
  • high and low pressure centers
  • areas of clouds and precipitation.

17
What two main methods are there for tracking
weather?
  • A. Forecasting Method
  • B. Persistence Method
  • C. Trends Method
  • D. Both A B
  • E. Both B C

History
How do Hurricanes affect our History?
22
Katrina
  • A map of Hurricane Katrina's movement and the
    areas hit. (Map Jim McMahon)
  • Emergency personnel searched for survivors
  • Flooding
  • Rebuilding the Gulf Coast

23
RITA

  • Make people leave their homes
  • Make it difficult to find our basic needs
  • Separate families
  • Cause death

28
What can hurricanes do to Buildings?
  • Flood
  • Damage
  • Destroy
  • Inhabitable

29
What should we do if a Hurricane is coming?
  • Listen to the news for updates
  • Get extra basic supplies such as water
  • Board up our homes
  • Leave

30
Mapping Assignment
Draw four circles to show where each Hurricane
hit Katrina, Rita, Andrew, and Galveston
31
Health
  • How are Hurricanes and Health related?

32
Victims
  • 4 step help list
  • 1.  Accept the fact that hurricanes happen
  • 2.  Avoid preoccupation with storm progress
  • 3.  Have a well-developed personal storm plan
  • 4.  Map alternate evacuation routes
