7.3 Multivariable Systems
  • To solve systems of equations involving many
    variables, first convert the system to row
    echelon form.
  • This form requires a decreasing number of
    variables per equation and all lead coefficients
    equal to one.
  • Row echelon form can be obtained by using the
    elementary row operations. These operations allow
    rows
  • to be interchanged, multiplied by a constant, or
    combined with addition or subtraction.
  • Original Form
  • x - 2y 3z 9
  • -x 3y 4
  • 2x - 5y 5z 17
  • Add the first equation to the second to produce a
    new second equation.
  • Subtract two times the first equation from the
    third equation to produce a new third equation.
  • Add the second equation to the third equation to
    produce a new third equation.
  • Multiply the third equation by 1/2 to produce a
    new third equation.
