  • GOAL
  • To develop a statewide K-16 system that engages,
    prepares, and sustains continuous development of
    professionals whose content and pedagogical
    knowledge advances student learning.

  • Six Objectives
  • 1. All of the teacher preparation programs in the
    states five public universities will be
    redesigned to reflect the National Board
    Professional Teaching Standards.
  • 2. To provide learning opportunities for quality
    education for paraprofessionals that reflect the
    National Board for Professional Teaching
    Standards.
  • 3. To launch the professional development for all
    practicing teachers that introduces the practices
    set by the NBPTS practices that demand
    reflective practice, portfolio collections, and
    student work analysis.

  • 4. To develop and initiate a system that recruits
    and supports practicing teachers who will pursue
    and earn National Board Certification.
  • 5. To establish a consortium that will take
    leadership for the advancement of quality
    teaching and learning relative to National Board
    for Professional Teaching Standards.
  • 6. The South Dakota Legislative Research Council
    (LRC) will participate with the Leadership
    Academy in the review of existing legislation
    relative to the goals of the Teacher Quality
    Enhancement Program.

  • These standards represent a consensus among
    accomplished teachers and other education experts
    about what accomplished teachers should know and
    be able to do.
  • Five Core Propositions which describe the highest
    level of teaching in different disciplines and
    with students at different developmental levels.

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
  • Are the NBPTS Standards realistic and attainable?
  • The NBPTS Standards for every field emphasize
    the importance of creating learning environments
    that offer all students an equal opportunity to
    learn. They also take into account the effect of
    differences in students developmental levels and
    backgrounds on teachers practice. The NBPTS
    Standards are designed to accommodate the variety
    of settings in which teachers work, reflect the
    reality of a range of teaching circumstances, and
    describe the multiple approaches teachers might
    take to reach curricular and pedagogical
    objectives.

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
  • How do candidates for National Board
    Certification use the NBPTS Standards during the
    assessment process?
  • Candidates for NBC participate in a rigorous,
    standards-based performance assessment that takes
    up to seven months to complete. Because the
    assessment is based on the NBPTS Standards,
    becoming familiar with the standards and learning
    to put them into action in the classroom is the
    best way candidates can prepare for the
    assessment process.

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
  • Are the NBPTS Standards useful outside the
    context of the National Board Certification
    process?
  • Yes. The NBPTS Standards codify the knowledge
    base of the accomplished teacher and draw
    attention to the many factors that contribute to
    accomplished practice. Even teachers who are not
    immediately interested in pursuing National Board
    Certification can benefit from studying the NBPTS
    Standards for their field and applying the
    standards to support teaching practice. Use and
    awareness of the standards can also encourage the
    general public and those responsible for hiring
    teachers to redefine their notions of what
    constitutes good teaching.
  • South Dakotas use of the NBPTS for pre-service
    preparation may be quite novel and maybe even
    cutting-edge!
