3- Marcena was born with a congenital heart defect,
called Transposition of the Great Arteries.
4- She had her first operation
- when she was one day old.
5- She had her first open heart surgery when she was
six months old
6- She barely grew during her first six months, and
weighed only 10 lbs. for her first surgery.
7- The open heart surgery was to correct the defect,
and resulted in Marcena needing a pacemaker from
the time she was six months old.
8- Although the pacemaker limited Marcenas physical
ability, her condition didnt delay her learning
to speak and walk, as the doctors predicted it
would.

19- Marcena is the oldest of three children.
20- She was 13 when she had her first heart
transplant on July 28, 1993 at Pittsburgh
Childrens Hospital. She was in the hospital for
6 weeks, and went right back to school after her
surgery.

laughing.

25Marcena became a counselor at Pittsburgh
Childrens Hospital Heart Camp, where she helped
children who were facing transplants.

transplant.

31and won four medals at the US Transplant Games
in Salt Lake City in 1996
32Marcena graduated from City Honors with her class
in 1998, a big accomplishment, as most transplant
patients end up being a year behind due to
missing school because of sickness or surgery.

35Marcena went to ECC and received an associates
degree in Human Services.
36Marcena received a second heart transplant on
October 18, 2003.
37When she was first told about the surgery in
August, her primary concern was getting back in
school by January.
38In January, 2004 Marcena transferred to Buffalo
State to major in Social Work. She wanted to
help others.
39Education was extremely important to Marcena.
40Her desire to achieve a college education
inspired her parents to start the Marcena Lozano
Memorial Scholarship Fund after her death.
41Marcena loved dancing, singing, the ocean,
dolphins, camping, barbecues, 80s music, and
scary movies.
