• First formed in New York City, 1875
• Trend shifted from a private matter to one of
  public concern
• 1960s marked great change for the system

Application Process

• Fill out a paper application provided by CPS
• Required back-ground check
• Interview with supervisor at CPS

General Description and Purpose of CPS

• Government funded agency
• Provides services to neglected, abused, or
  exploited children and their families
• Focus is the rehabilitation of the home

• Rescue the family for the child
• Provide permanency planning for the children
  removed from their home

Description of Internship

• Assigned social workers and secretaries to follow
  and assist
• Office work filing, mailing letters, closing
  cases, phone calls, etc.
• Field work follow workers as they performed
  visits, investigations,and removals

• Read both current and closed cases
• Observed on case assessments
• Observed unit meetings
• Observed parent/child meetings

Benefits of Internship

• Provided work experience
• Taught me the intricate workings of the CPS
  system
• Challenged me to further understand abusive
  parents and the children who are victims
• Strengthened my desire to work in some form of
  child protection agency or related field
