Title: Math's in the community BRICK LAYING
1Math's in the communityBRICK LAYING
by John Samarelli
2MATHS AS A WHOLEWhat do you think worked
particularly well? and why?
As my main focus of this semester was
bricklaying. I chose this trade as it was very
different to plumbing which I have been studying
all year and at Vet Studies. I also have done
work experience before when I was younger so I
wanted to learn more about was is involved in
this particular trade. I think I went well in
all of my math's test even though I only had done
4 compared to ten the previous semester. All of
the tests that I face with were all challenging
with but I think I pulled it of when I received
high marks in all my tests. I think I worked
better alone this semester than last semester as
games and people distracted me form doing my work
before. I knew that I didnt have long as these
two terms had become closer to an end, so I made
the effort to finish all my work off earlier.
3Problems and challenges that you had to face and
deal with how did you deal with them?
One of the problems that I faced with was to
concentrate on finishing my school work at home
and on time because there were too many other
distractions that would lead me on to start them
and forget all about my homework. I struggled
to finish work at home which put more pressure to
catch up and finish. I must admit I became lazy
throughout the semester in all my subjects and
kept saying to myself that I will finish my
work. The way I dealt with this problem was
simply locking myself in my room, and
concentrating until all my work was completed.
4How did you feel about your feedback you received
and why?
I felt good about my feedback as it was very
positive throughout the semester my teacher gave
me encouragement to strive to fulfil my year 12
and pass. This was by always checking up on the
work that I had completed and giving me positive
feedback when I told him I had gained an
apprenticeship this semester. Also the positive
feedback for my work experience employer as he
was very positive to me. He went on to tell me
that a had a bright future ahead in the building
industry and that I worked hard and showed that I
was eager to learn.
5Do you think your knew skills will help you in
the future?
Yes I believe that my knew skills will help me as
it already has paid off when I went for a pre
apprenticeship test. which I was able to receive
a mark of around 80. The maths tests played a
big part in helping me to understand and learn
more about the questions and maths that I will
need to know in the future. My organisations
skills also helped me as I was able to organise
my apprenticeship without the help from my
parents or friends.
6If you were to do this community activity again,
what would you do differently? what knew skills
would u like to learn?
If I was able to do this community activity again
I would choose tiling. I would choose tiling
because I will use tiling in the future as it is
part of the plumbing industry and also because I
would like to peruse a business and career in
bathrooms renovations one day. I would chose
different preliminaries, as the last two semester
preliminaries were boring and they needed to be
more hands on.
7BRICKLAYING Pictures of my work experience
This is a photo of the house and the garage being
built underneath.
This is me carting bricks to the ladder to up
stairs.
8This is me using the jointing tool to finish off
the brick work to the wall. This is best done
when the concrete is damp.
I had to attach brick ties to the wall so it can
be stable to the wooden frame. I used the back of
a club to hammer the nails into position.
9This is me with the line and pins. I had to run
it from corner to corner to that the brick stay
level when they are laid.
10I had to cut the brick into the approx
measurement to fit in the gaps that are for half
bricks. I used the bolster and club to cut the
brick.
This is me measuring the wall so I know how far
to come across so the wall lines up with the
frame of the roof.

12Some of the materials used in BRICKLAYING
This is the four main materials for bricklaying.
Mixer, bricks, sand, cement. The cement was mixed
in a 646 ratio. Which was sand cement then
sand again.
