WarnMe emergency alert service
We're improving campus safety.
  • WarnMe is a new alerting and warning service for
UC Berkeley, to help keep members of the campus
community safe if there is a threat to health and
    safety on campus
  • Service was launched on August 25, 2008
  • Uses contact information that members of the
    campus community provide
  • Individually alerts faculty, staff, and students
who sign up and provide contact information in
    advance
  • Sends immediate alerts via phone, text message,
    e-mail, and TTY
  • Registrants choose how the campus contacts them

You get the information you need, fast.
  • WarnMe is activated only when absolutely
necessary, by the UC Police Department or Public
    Affairs
  • Alerts are delivered to members of the campus
    community within minutes
  • The contact information registrants provide is
    kept private

    campus? Chemical spill or biohazard?
    Earthquake response? Bomb threat? Other
significant emergencies on or near campus
  • WarnMe may also be activated to send urgent
messages when information will be helpful but no
    individual action is immediately required

Managers and supervisors have special
responsibilities in an emergency.
  • Many campus employees do not have access to
phones and e-mail. WarnMe alerts cannot reach
    them
  • It is vital that their managers and supervisors
immediately alert them to emergency situations
    and provide instructions

9

The campus siren alert will still be used.
  • WarnMe will be tested in conjunction with the
campus siren alert, which is tested at noon on
the first Wednesday of each month
  • At all other times, when campus community members
    hear the siren, they should
  • Shelter in place
  • Shut doors and windows
  • Seek information and instructions
on the web at www.berkeley.edu or
    emergency.berkeley.edu by phone at
    (800) 705-9998 on the radio at KALX
    (90.7 FM)

WarnMe is carefully planned and tested.
  • Chancellor Birgeneau charged a taskforce to plan
and implement an alerting and warning system by
    Sept. 2008
  • To ensure reliable service 24/7, UC Berkeley is
working closely with a commercial provider,
Wide-area Rapid Notification that specializes in
    rapid public notification
  • There is a redundant infrastructure around the
    country to support the system
  • UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, and UCSF are using the
same provider for their alerting and warning
    system
  • Periodic large-scale tests of the system at UC
Berkeley will be scheduled and announced. The
first test will be conducted on November 5.
