Did You Know?
  • Nearly every two seconds, someone in the country
    needs blood.
  • It is becoming more and more difficult to
maintain a stable and secure blood supply. The
need for blood is rising with advances in
technology and the aging of the baby boom
    population.
  • Approximately 60 of the U.S. population is
eligible to donate blood but only 5 donate.
  • The top three reasons people do not donate is
    because
  • 1. They have not been asked.
  • 2. They do not know about the need.
  • 3. Fear

3
Did You Know?
  • Each day about 38,000 red blood cell units are
used in the United States. The American Red
Cross collects nearly half the nations blood
supply. The Red Cross provides blood for
patients in nearly 3,000 hospitals across the
    U.S.
  • About seven percent of the U.S. population has
type O negative blood. They are the universal
donor because their blood can be transfused to
    patients with any blood type.
  • Every unit of whole blood can be separated into
several components (red cells, platelets and
plasma) potentially saving the lives of three or
    more patients.

4
Did You Know?
  • Red blood cells have a shelf life of 42 days and
platelets last only 5 days, so it must be
replenished constantly there is simply no
    substitute for human blood.
  • More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with
cancer each year. Many of them need blood
    products, sometimes daily, during chemotherapy
    treatment.
  • Donating blood is a safe process. A sterile
needle is used only once for each donor and then
    discarded.
  • People have 10 to 12 pints of blood in their
    body.
  • Blood donors give a pint of blood per donation.
