1
Strategies for Application-Empowered Networks
  • Moderator
  • Maxine Brown, University of Illinois at Chicago
  • Panelists
  • Tom DeFanti, University of Illinois at Chicago
    (USA)
  • Larry Landweber, NSF (USA)
  • Kees Neggers, SURFnet (The Netherlands)
  • Harvey Newman, Caltech (USA)
  • Bill St. Arnaud, CANARIE (Canada)

2
Strategies for Application-Empowered Networks
  • E-science is data-intensive science.
  • How much data are we talking about? Now? By 2010?
Many e-science applications need to move large
data or interact, in real time, with large data.
What are today's networking barriers to doing
    so?
  • Harvey Newman
  • Bill St. Arnaud

3
Strategies for Application-Empowered Networks
  • From your points of view, describe
    cyber-infrastructure (in the USA) and
e-infrastructure (in The Netherlands) and their
    networking components. What applications are
taking advantage of new networking capabilities
above and beyond shared networks? Larry
    Landweber
  • Kees Neggers

4
Strategies for Application-Empowered Networks
  • Define application-empowered networks, in terms
of both physical characteristics (is it just
    bandwidth?) and services/middleware (to handle
latency, jitter, scheduling, etc). How do they
compare with general-purpose RE networks (i.e.,
those that support a wide range of applications)?
    Do we need autonomous application-specific
    networks? Why are application-empowered networks
    only now becoming available?
  • Tom DeFanti
  • Bill St. Arnaud

5
Strategies for Application-Empowered Networks
  • What are the challenges to creating
application-empowered networks? How do we solve
    them?
  • In particular, one challenge is attracting users
how do we encourage e-scientists to use
    application-empowered networks, or any networks
    for that matter?
  • Harvey Newman
  • Tom DeFanti

6
Strategies for Application-Empowered Networks
  • How are government-funded facilities (and
networks) today addressing the needs of
    high-performance applications? What will the
facilities (and networks) look like 2-3 years
    from now?
  • Larry Landweber
  • Kees Neggers
  • Bill St. Arnaud

7
Strategies for Application-Empowered Networks
