Alternative School Program

2
Introduction
  • Alternative learning programs offer primary
instruction to all At-risk youths outside the
    regular classroom setting.
  • The alternative programs offer youths with a
chance to overcome their weaknesses and
    capitalize on their strengths.
  • The program works with the youth to help them
with academics as well as life skills.

3
Characteristics
  • Alternative learning programs include caring and
demanding teachers that set and maintain high
    goals for the youths.
  • The atmosphere promotes a sense of family and
    community.
  • The main focus is on the whole student, not just
on academics but social, emotional and personal
    growth.

4
Statement of the Problem
  • Not much research has been done focusing on
At-risk youths and the effect their environment
    has on their behavior.
  • At-risk youth continue to fail in regular
classroom settings and achieve higher academic
levels when in a structured alternative setting.

5
Purpose of the study
  • The purpose of this study is to research the
effect of techniques used in alternative school
programs to those techniques used in public
    school programs for At-risk youth.

6
Definition of terms
  • Alternative school- school that accommodates to
the educational needs of a delinquent or At-risk
    youth.
  • Delinquent or At-risk youth- a youth that is
influenced by family, peer groups, and/or poverty
that lead to a delinquent life-style.
  • Behavior modification- strategies and techniques
used to change a youths behavior to help them
    meet their educational needs.

7
Limitations of the Study
  • Youths success in the programs could be effected
by other factors then just the techniques used in
the classroom setting, home emotional and
outside factors which affect the outcome of
success and attitudes of the administrators could
also be affected by outside factors that are
beyond the control of the setting.

8
Techniques
  • Many programs use behavior modification
    techniques.
  • Others rely on the law and the court system to
    take care of the delinquency.
  • The community and family are two areas that must
be involved in successful programs to help
    At-risk youths lead successful lives.

9
  • As stated before At-risk or delinquent youths are
youths influenced by family, peer groups, and/or
poverty which lead to a delinquent life-style.
  • The youths are At-risk for dropping out of school
and never receiving a high school diploma.

10
Conclusion
  • The data collected indicates that alternative
    school programs have 100 attendance.
  • Public schools have, on average, 74.5
    attendance.
  • This would indicate that the alternative programs
are more effective in making the youths
participate in the programs they have developed.
  • The teacher to student ratio is much smaller, and
this will allow more one-on-one time with
    students.
