Title: Becoming a Good Teacher

1
Becoming a Good Teacher
  • Personal spiritual development in the area of
    teaching.

2
Introduction
  • At one point or another knowing it or not you
    have taught another personsomething.
  • You may have taught by way of step-by-step
    instruction lecture warning or example.
  • You may have taught something simple that was
easy to explain or something complex enough that
demanded lecturing, examples and other means of
    illustrations.
  • Over the years of your teaching experiences you
have refined your ability of teaching others.

3
Introduction
  • When it comes to teaching Gods word and our
    spiritual development
  • Some (many?) of us may not view ourselves as fit
to be teachers of His word.
  • We also learn that being a teacher of Gods
wonderful truths it is an eventual must as we
    grow spiritually.

4
Introduction
  • Thus, this lesson is focused on how we can grow
as servants in the Lord in the area of teaching
    His word.
  • Things within our control that we can use to make
improvements in our growth in becoming better
    teachers of Gods word.
  • Working with what God has given us.

5
The Making of a Good Teacher
  • Your talent (in the realm of teaching)
  • Clearly, we are not born teachers, and not all of
us are blessed with the same kind of talents in
service to our Lord. Rom. 126-8
  • Further, some are given a greater measure of
talents to teach (Matt. 2515, 20ff), thus some
are naturally gifted as good teachers, while
others may take longer to grow into being good
    teachers.
  • Finally, while all of us may never teach
formally, there comes a time we (within our God
given abilities) should grow to a level of
maturityso as to become teachers of Gods word.
    Heb. 512

6
The Making of a Good Teacher
  • Your attitude (from stewardship to desire)
  • Jesus attitude to teach (and heal/help) others
was compelled by his compassion for them. cp.
    Matt. 935-38
  • In essence, Jesus taught his disciples to have
the same attitude and to pray the Lord of the
harvest to send out workers into His harvest.
    Matt. 938
  • Your attitude toward others reflects
  • Your compassion regarding the souls of others.
  • Your commitment to fulfilling the Lords will out
of stewardship. Cp. 1 Cor. 916-18

7
The Making of a Good Teacher
  • Your effort From Bible reading to Bible study.
  • Naturally, it is difficult at best to be a good
teacher if you dont know the subject matter
(whether it be a scripture or a topic).
  • The more you spend time reading on your subject
matter the more acquainted you become with it (be
it a passage of scripture or a topic).
  • The same can be said for Bible study.
  • The bottom line the amount of energy you put
into your reading/study goes a long way into
    making a good teacher.

8
Developing a Desire to Teach
  • Pray often to our God. Phil. 46
  • Pray for those who need to hear Gods word our
    children, family members, neighbors, co-workers,
    etc.
  • It is hard to have compassion on people we do not
    pray for.
  • It is hard to have a sense of urgency without
constant prayer with respect to teaching His
    will.
  • Pray for wisdom to teach the truth out of love
for the purpose of saving souls and edifying the
    body.
  • Make supplication in how God can use you to
fulfill His will in teaching His word.

9
Developing a Desire to Teach
  • Build your knowledge of Gods word.
  • Read/study your Bible every day.
  • The more you read and study, the more you will
grow in appreciating and benefiting your time in
    Gods word.
  • NOTE Bible reading like strenuous exercise can
be taxing on the mind, but we become conditioned
only by exercising in continuous reading.

10
Developing a Desire to Teach
  • Build your knowledge of Gods word.
  • Build a library of biblical resources
    (dictionaries, concordances, interlinears, etc.).
  • Time in Gods word is essential, but there are
times when tools are necessary in our being able
    to understand what we read.
  • NOTE Many spend hundreds or thousands of dollars
on recreational activities or things, but cannot
afford the tools necessary to become good
    teachers of Gods word. Think!

11
Developing a Desire to Teach
  • Spend quality time with those you need to teach
    children, family, relatives, friends, neighbors,
    brethren.
  • Time spent with others will only increase your
love for them and bring opportunity(ies) to teach
    them.
  • Such time will also give you insight on what they
need to hear and how you can prepare yourself to
    teach them.

12
Conclusion
  • It is important that we all grow to a point where
we can become teachers of Gods word.
  • There must, however, be a desire for personal
spiritual growth if we are to build the
compassion and urgency necessary to becoming good
    teachers of Gods word.
