1Education and Outreach at CfAOand YOU!
- Education and Outreach mission of CfAO
- Graduate and Postgraduate Education
- K-14 public at large outreach
- Building a more diverse environment
- My own interest in CfAO ? my own research
focus on dark matter ,WIMPs - Instrumentation MEMS,detectors Cosmology
- Linkages Education, Industry
- Bring my experience from CfPA to help start up
-
2Education and Outreach Mission of CfAO
- NSF Science and Technology Centers
- Not only excellent science adaptive optics for
astronomy and vision - But also change the way science is done
- Develop partnerships (between fields, with
labs/ industry) - Integrate science and education
- Outreach to K-12 and public at large
- Increase participation of women and
minorities - CfAO and E/O
- Take this second aspect of the mission seriously
? political correctness - 5 time commitment of scientists in the Center
(12.5 of budget!) - Exploit CfAO skills and resources
- Involve every scientist at every Center nodes
- Local focus, enhance impact of individual
scientists
3Overarching Theme
- Optics in Nature - Optics in Science
- Fascinating phenomena engage
- Marvelous images gt
Opportunities to educate K-adults - Exciting results motivate
Images as inspiration
4Enrich Graduate/Postgraduate Program
- Provide multidisciplinary education
- Participation in Center workshops and retreats
- Multidisciplinary training Astronomy-Vision-Devic
es. Formal courses. - Bridging gap between Physical and Biological
sciences and Engineering - Access to broad support network, short stays in
other labs industry - Disseminate UC Berkeley Career Management Series
- More than just practical tips Reflection on
core values - Diversity of careers
- Skill training
-
- Commitment of identified CfAO professors at each
node - Involve students and postdocs in outreach
- Integral part of their training 5-10
- CfPA experience It works (for kids, for
scientists marked for life) - 2 CfAO Education Fellows (postdocs, 50
education, following CfPA)

5How can you get involved?(Students/Postdocs)
- Note
- 5 is 1 day a month or 2 weeks a year. Focus
your effort! - Choose one aspect for which you are gifted and
that you enjoy - Our program is under construction you can and
should shape it! - Not in addition to the rest, but conscious choice
in the allocation of your time part of your job! - Opportunities at graduate/postgraduate level
- Participate/become leaders in effort to diversify
education - Support graduate students from other fields
- Opportunities at undergraduate level
- Support to undergraduates in the lab
- In particular HBCU/minority summer internships
- Help in the development of new curriculum/
demonstration around Optics - In particular pre-med (UCSD A Quirrenbach,
RochesterD. Williams) - Curriculum at Carthage/Yerkes/Chicago lt-gt
Chabot - Participate in Alu-Like program
6ALU LIKE program to train Native Hawaiians as
technicians for Hawaii observatories
- Currently very few Hawaiians among observatory
staff - We are bring trainees to LLNL 6 months Hawaii
internships follow
Our first interns Kristian Keahi and Shordon
Lopes, on Mauna Kea Shordon is now working at
Keck Kristian will go to college in fall Next
group of interns is currently being recruited
7How can you get involved?(Students/Postdocs)
- K-12
- Emphasis on teacher enhancement/support in middle
school - on under served communities
- Opportunities
- Bay Area
- Chabot Optics in Nature - Optics in
Science - Teacher workshop first in Summer 2000
- Direct involvement in K-12
- Berkeley Physics/Astronomy 100 class room
- ISTAT Interactive University
- Development of curriculum for the Web
- UCSC To be defined e.g. Saturday Academy
- Chicago
- Space Explorers participation in summer
workshop open to all - Public at large
- Construct/ maintain web site
- Chabotneed for volunteer docents -gt other
museums/Science Centers
LA/UCSD area to be defined
8Space Explorers Program/Chicago (CARA)
- Intensive support of minority students
Outstanding success - HS Jr H, 30/yr for 4 years
- Hands-on Labs 2x/week during academic year
- Residential Experiences at Yerkes
- Field Trips Enrichment Activities
- 100 African American
- 69 Females
- Pipeline - skills, support motivation
- Intensive, Immersion, Long Term
- Involve Parents School
- Active Participation of Scientists
- Planned extension to Oakland
- Chabot
- Indian American Public Charter School
9A more supportive and diverse environment
- Inside CfAO lt 1st priority
- Build/enhance a supportive atmosphere for a
diverse population of scientists - Women Intellectually
demanding/ Supportive of individuals - Minority Collaborative/ Work at the Frontier
- Also non standard type Basic skills/Promoting
differences of style - Increase input into pipeline
- Chabot

- Saturday Academy
- HBCU internships (students teachers?)
- Special communities
- Hawaian Alu-Like
- Indian American Public Charter School
