course. Deviations may be necessary.

  what to expect from me as well as what I expect

Course Description

• This course is a review of intermediate algebra.
• Topics include properties of numbers, linear
  equations and inequalities, quadratic equations,
  polynomials, rational expressions and roots.

Office Hours

• Office hours will be after class Monday and
  Wednesday.
• Tuesday afternoons 200 PM 400 PM.
• Additional office hours are available by
  appointment.

  Combined Course, Charles P. McKeague, Saunders
  College Publishing. ISBN 0-03-029107-0.

Course Content

• Chapters 6 10 of the textbook as well as
  selected sections of chapters 11 and 13.
• Some COMPASS review material will be included in
  the course.
• See the calendar for specific information.

Calculators

• Use of calculators is allowed on all tests.
• Each student taking this course needs access to a
  TI-83, TI-84 or equivalent graphing/scientific
  calculator.
• Students will use their calculator while
  participating in class, taking exams, and
  completing homework exercises.
• Please note that sharing calculators during
  graded assignments is not permitted.

COMPASS

• In order to complete Learning Support
  requirements for mathematics, students must earn
  a grade of C or better in MATH 0099 and pass the
  COMPASS exit exam with a score of 40 or higher.

Grading Policies

• Five exams will be given during the semester.
  Each exam will count 100 points.
• Students can earn an additional 100 points
  through class participation and homework
  exercises.
• There will be a 100 point multiple choice event
  at the end of the semester.
• Each students average for the semester will be
  based on a total of 700 points.
• The usual grading scale (90100 is an A,
  8089 is a B, etc.) will apply.

Academic Policies

• If a student simply quits attending class without
  officially withdrawing, the student will receive
  a grade of F in the class.
• The last day for officially withdrawing from
  class without grade penalty is mid-semester.
• Withdrawals after mid-semester are subject to
  approval by the Vice President for Academic
  Affairs and will be issued only in cases of
  extreme emergency or hardship.

  technology to enhance mathematical thinking and

Attendance

• Students are expected to attend each and every
  scheduled class session.
• Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each
  class.
• Since lectures begin promptly at the scheduled
  time, students are encouraged to avoid arriving
  late to class.

Extended Absence

• Students, who have circumstances that prevent
  them from continuing to attend classes over an
  extended period of time, sometimes request that
  the faculty member permit them to submit work in
  absentia to receive credit to complete the
  course.
• If the concurrent absences will constitute more
  than 15 of the class sessions for the term, then
  written permission from the Division Chair is
  required before any course assignments can be
  completed while missing class.
• The student must be in good academic standing in
  the course to make the request. All approved
  coursework must be completed by the end of the
  semester in which the course was begun.

No Make-up tests

• Students will receive a zero on any exam that
  they miss.
• There are no make-up tests in this class.
• At the end of the semester all students have the
  option of replacing one exam grade with their
  percentage grade on the optional final exam.
• If a student misses an exam, that exam grade will
  be replaced by the final exam.

Cheating

• Cheating (or even the appearance of cheating)
  will not be tolerated in this class.
• Any student that the instructor suspects of
  cheating will be removed from the testing area.
• The issue will be referred to the appropriate
  Georgia Highlands committee for investigation.

Learning Disabilities

• Students who feel they may need an accommodation
  based on the impact of a disability should make
  an appointment with the College Access Center
  (706 802-5003) to coordinate reasonable
  accommodations.
• The students are also welcome to contact the
  instructors privately to discuss ones specific
  needs.

This message applies only to students receiving
financial aid 

• Federal regulations state that if a student did
  not attend classes and received failing grades,
  then the grades were not earned and financial aid
  needs to be reduced accordingly. 
• Please be advised that any student receiving a
  0.00 GPA will be required to prove that the 0.00
  GPA was earned by attending classes or completing
  requirements for each class. 
• Students who have earned at least one passing
  grade for the semester will not be affected by
  this regulation.  If a student has properly
  withdrawn from all classes, the students
  financial aid should be adjusted from the time
  they signed the withdrawal form.

Academic Support Rules 1

• During each semester of enrollment any student
  (full or part-time) must first register for all
  required Learning Support courses before being
  allowed to register for other courses.
• Students requiring remediation in two or more
  areas may be allowed to enroll for remediation in
  two Learning Support courses along with a FCS
  College Studies, FC Computer Studies, or a
  Physical Education course.

Academic Support Rules 2

• A student may not accumulate more that 20 hours
  of academic credit before completing ALL Learning
  Support requirements.
• A student who accumulates twenty hours of
  academic credit and has not successfully
  completed required Learning Support courses may
  enroll ONLY in Learning Support courses until
  requirements are successfully completed.

Academic Support Rules 3

• A transfer Learning Support student may be
  granted semester hours to exit an area(s) if that
  student was making appropriate progress at the
  sending institution and is ready for the exit
  level course at Georgia Highlands College and
  provided the student has not exceeded system
  attempts.

Academic Support Rules 4

• Students enrolled in both Learning Support and
  credit courses may not withdraw from Learning
  Support courses unless they also withdraw from
  credit courses.

• A student must complete requirements in any one
  area of Learning Support in three attempts.
• If a student does not complete requirements in
  three attempts, the student will be suspended for
  three years, at which time the institution may
  readmit the student.

Academic Support Rules 6

• Suspension for three years is subject to appeal.
• To be eligible to appeal, the student must be in
  an exit level course and must have reached the
  semester hour limit in one Learning
  Support/Developmental Studies area.
• If granted the additional course, the student may
  enroll in only that course for the semester.
