Cerebral Palsy (C P)
  • CP is a condition caused by injury to the parts
    of the brain that control muscles and various
    body functions
  • Before Birth
  • During the Delivery Process
  • Shortly After Birth

Cerebral Palsy (C P)
  • The severity of CP is broken down into three
    general categories
  • Mild may mean a child is somewhat clumsy
  • Moderate may mean a child walks with a limp, and
    may need a leg brace or cane
  • Severe affects all parts of a childs physical
    abilities, will need a wheelchair and other
    specialized equipment to assist in mobility

  • Severe CP generally has other problems also which
    might include
  • Hearing damage in the brain with regards to
    hearing capability
  • Sight damage in the brain with regards to the
    ability to see well
  • Learning Skills damage in the brain affecting
    their ability to learn normally

  • Prognosis C P generally does not get worse over
    time and children with C P have a normal life
    span.
  • Quality of Life the quality of life suffers
    because of the physical impairment
  • Therapy through intense therapy muscle groups
    can be trained to function with increased ability
  • Love those affected with C P have an amazing
    ability to receive and give love!

  • How Common is C P About 500,000 people in
    America have some form of C P. Each year 8,000
    infants and nearly 1,500 preschool-age children
    are diagnosed with C P.
  • What are the signs of C P?
  • stiff, irregular movements
  • uncontrolled body movements
  • excessive drooling and difficulties in
    swallowing or speaking

  • What About Treatment C P generally does not get
    worse over time. Proven treatment procedures
    include
  • Physical Therapy helps develop stronger muscles
    to help with walking, sitting and balancing
  • Occupational Therapy develop motor skills such
    as dressing, eating, writing, and other daily
    living tasks
  • Speech Therapy helps the child develop his or
    her communication skills
  • Support devices and equipment braces,
    wheelchairs, walkers, are generally necessary
