Title: Will Your Boat Hold the Most Pennies

1
Will Your Boat Hold the Most Pennies?!
  • An asynchronous lesson on buoyancy.

2
Materials Needed
  • Each group needs
  • A roll of foil
  • A pencil for each person
  • Two pieces of paper for each person
  • At the table you will find
  • A basket full of pennies
  • A large tub of water

3
Group Roles
  • Reader reads all directions from the computer
and controls the power point show.
  • Scribe writes down all suggestions from the
    group members
  • Materials Specialist gathers all materials for
    the lesson
  • Coach makes sure all ideas are being heard and
    encourages group members to participate

4
Here Is Your Mission If You Choose To Accept It!
  • As a group, talk about the essentials for making
    a sturdy boat.
  • Make sure you write all of the ideas down.
  • Draw a diagram of how you will design your boat.

5
Design Your Boat!
  • The foil in your roll is all the foil you can use
    to design your boat.
  • Make sure everyone participates in putting the
    boat together.
  • Decide on a name for your boat as a group!
  • Predict how many pennies you can put into your
    boat before it will sink.

6
Group Roles While Testing Your Boat
  • Boat Captain places the boat into the water
  • Penny Placer drops the pennies into the boat
  • Penny Tracker keeps track of how many pennies
are placed into the boat, count each one loud
enough for the entire group to hear
  • Penny Checker makes sure pennies are being
counted correctly. Makes sure penny tracker
stops counting when the penny that makes the boat
    sink is counted.

7
Time For the Big Test!
  • Take your boat to the table with the tub of water
    to test it out!
  • Table Rules
  • Only one group at the table at a time!
  • Once your boat sinks, quickly clean up your boat
and sit back down with your group.
  • Record your boats name and how many pennies it
held on the board for the entire class to see.

8
Communicating Data
  • Make a chart like the one shown.
  • Record each groups final penny count.

9
What Determined How Many Pennies Your Boat Held?
  • When your boat is placed on top of the water, it
encounters an upward force which is provided by
    the liquid.
  • This force is called buoyancy, which allows the
object to float on the liquid.
  • At the same time, the objects gravitational
force is pushing down on the liquid.

10
What Does That Have To Do With How Many Pennies
My Boat Held?
  • The boat floated on the water because its
downward force weighed less than the upward
    buoyancy force of the water.
  • After adding the weight of the pennies to the
boat, the force of the boat became stronger than
    the waters buoyancy force.
  • This caused the boat to sink.

While Others Are Finishing Up.
  • Click on this link to view a fun video clip about
    buoyancy!
  • When the video is over, discuss other objects
that you encounter everyday that shows the work
    of buoyancy.
