Overview
  • History
  • Mission
  • Onboard Equipment

  • Conclusion

3
History
  • In 1998, NOAA and NASA award contract to Boeing
to build up to four Geostationary Operational
    Environmental Satellites (GOES)
  • GOES-N designed as extension of the program to
provide continuous monitoring of Earths weather
  • GOES-N launched into geosynchronous orbit May
24th 2006 from Cape Canaveral, FL
  • Launch vehicle consisted of Delta IV

4
History Continued
  • GOES system currently consists of GOES-12
    (GOES-East), GOES-10 (GOES-West), and GOES-11
    which is in on-orbit storage
  • GOES-11 will replace GOES-10
  • GOES-N will be renamed GOES-13 upon arrival in
    final orbit
  • Will be stored until needed

5
Mission
  • Primary mission is to provide meteorologist with
information vital to predicting local weather
    events
  • GOES-N will also provide ability to monitor dust
storms, volcanic activity, and forest fires
  • Will support the search and rescue satellite
    aided system (SARSAT)

6
Onboard Equipment
  • GOES-N carries two primary instruments as well as
    collection of various other sensors
  • Imager Imaging radiometer used to produce images
    of Earths surface and temperature
  • Sounder Gathers atmospheric data allowing
    meteorologist to examine atmospheric temperature
and moisture profiles by mathematical analysis
    and data from the imager

7
Improvements
  • Design lifetime increased from 7 to 10 years
  • Command data rate increased by 1750 bps over
    previous GOES version
  • Subsystem has been upgraded to sustain operation
    during eclipse
  • Image navigation and registration improved
    providing more accurate weather information

8
