• NSF received 80 proposals under the Nanoscale
  Science and Engineering Initiative (NSF 02-148)
• 35 awards for 100K each for one year duration
  (planning grants)
• Longer duration awards in the next competition
• Grantees meeting in summer 2004

Research Experience for Teachers (NSF 03-554)

• RET-Supplement
• Build long term collaborative relationship
  between K-12 Teachers and NSF Research Community
• Encourage active participation of Teachers in
  on-going NSF projects
• Current NSF grantees are encouraged to take
  advantage of this unique opportunity to
  participate

RET Program Making a Difference

• RET supplement to Prof. Lindsay at Arizona State
  University for Nanoscale Optoelectronics
• Milt Johnson, physics teacher at South Mountain
  Highschool (SMH) spent Summer, 2001 in the lab
  at ASU.
• An old Scanning Tunneling Microscope was donated
  by ASU to SMH and used in classroom teaching,
  putting Milts training to use.
• Concepts from atoms to biological molecules are
  reinforced with nanoscale images
