Title: Innovations in ECE Education

1
Innovations in ECE Education
  • Outline
  • Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education
  • Research Experience for Teachers (RET)
  • Opportunities for NSF-ECEDHA Cooperation
  • Kishan Baheti

2
Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education
  • NSF received 80 proposals under the Nanoscale
Science and Engineering Initiative (NSF 02-148)
  • 35 awards for 100K each for one year duration
    (planning grants)
  • Longer duration awards in the next competition
  • Grantees meeting in summer 2004

3
Research Experience for Teachers (NSF 03-554)
  • RET-Supplement
  • Build long term collaborative relationship
between K-12 Teachers and NSF Research Community
  • Encourage active participation of Teachers in
    on-going NSF projects
  • Current NSF grantees are encouraged to take
advantage of this unique opportunity to
    participate

4
Research Experience for Teachers
  • Examples of collaboration
  • Design of new experiments, modeling and
    simulations, algorithms and software development,
    analysis of data, ...
  • Encourage transfer of new knowledge to classroom
    activities
  • Supplement to current awards
  • 10,000 per teacher up to 2 teachers

5
RET Program Making a Difference
  • RET supplement to Prof. Lindsay at Arizona State
    University for Nanoscale Optoelectronics
  • Milt Johnson, physics teacher at South Mountain
Highschool (SMH) spent Summer, 2001 in the lab
    at ASU.
  • An old Scanning Tunneling Microscope was donated
by ASU to SMH and used in classroom teaching,
    putting Milts training to use.
  • Concepts from atoms to biological molecules are
    reinforced with nanoscale images

STM being used by SMH student
6
Research Experience for Teachers
  • RET- Site Proposals
  • Research experience for group of teachers in
    engineering laboratories with well defined
    projects
  • Funding 450,000 over 3 years
  • Proposal deadline June 10, 2003

7
Reaching Out to Teachers in Science and
Mathematics
  • Regional RET workshops
  • NSF-JHU-Howard Community College
  • 200 teachers and 40 NSF researchers from
    Virginia, DC, and Maryland
  • NSF-IEEE CSS Workshop at the American Control
    Conference
  • Nanotechnology workshop at Penn State for
    Virginia Teachers

8
Opportunities for NSF-ECEDHA Cooperation
  • Best practices in curriculum innovations at
    ECEDHA annual meetings
  • NSF-ECEDHA sponsored workshops in cooperation
    with IEEE Technical Societies
  • Bringing excitement of nanotechnolgy in K-12
    science and mathematics education
