Density
2
  • What is mass? Measure of the AMOUNT OF MATTER
making up an object. (how much stuff is in it)
  • What is weight? Measure of the FORCE OF GRAVITY
on an object. Measured in NEWTONS(N)
  • How do they compare? Your weight can change
based on location (ie. Weigh less on the moon due
to less gravity) but your mass always stays the
    same regardless of location.
  • MASS UNITS mg, g, Kg, also megagram (1000Kg)
  • TRIPLE BEAM BALANCEused in the lab to measure
    mass in grams.

3
  • VOLUME
  • 1. The AMOUNT OF SPACE an object takes up.
  • 2. The amount of space in a container
  • 3. The amount of liquid in a container
  • How is volume calculated?
  • Dimensional volumeuse formula L x W x H
  • Water displacementRead meniscus?place object in
    graduated cylinder?Read new meniscus?Subtract the
first number from the second number.
  • Units ml, L, cm3, m3
  • Devices used to calculate volume graduated
    cylinder
  • 1ml 1cm3 1cc

  • Density
  • 1. What is density? Measurement of how much mass
    is in a given volume.
  • 2. How is density calculated? DMass

  • Volume
  • 3. What is the density triangle and how is it
    used?
  • Units density of a liquid g/ml, solidg/cm3
  • Density of water 1g/ml
  • Float?density is lt 1g/ml
  • Sink? density is gt 1 g/ml
