• when a child is born it has 1 extra chromosome in
  each of the millions of cells in its body
• in babies with down syndrome they have 46 instead
  of 47 chromosomes
• the extra chromosome occurs at the 21st pair

Features

• People that have down syndrome can display a wide
  variety of features
• heart defects
• wide range of mental retardation and
  developmental delay
• illnesses such as hypothyroidism, epilepsy
• delayed language and motor skills

Physical Characteristics

• People that have down syndrome can display a wide
  variety of physical characteristics as well
• back of head is flattened
• slanted eyelids
• depressed nose bridge
• small mouth, ears, hands and feet
• lack of muscle tone
• gap between 1st 2nd toes
• have 1 line across palm
