Floors and Floor Framing
2
Floor Framing
  • A structure placed on top of the foundation that
    serves as a building platform.
  • Begins once the foundation is complete.
  • Usually happens before the foundation is back
    filled.
  • Floor framing helps the foundation withstand the
pressure the ground pushes on it.

3
Girders and Beams
  • They provided the needed support when the span is
to great to go from foundation to foundation.
  • Can be wood, metal, or engineered lumber.

Sill Plate or Mud Sill
  • What are they?
  • Is there a difference?
  • What do they do?
  • What are common problems?
  • How are the problems fixed?

6
Sill, What is it?
  • They are placed directly on top of the
foundation. A seal is placed between them and
the foundation. They give a nailing surface for
    the future structure
  • They are attached using bolts or straps.
  • A sill plate and a mud sill are one in the same.
Mud sill is an older term. A bed of mortar was
placed on the foundation and the sill was placed
    in it.

7
What are common problems?
  • Moisture and termites are big problems.
  • Both problems can be addressed by using
    chemically treated lumber.
  • Placing metal shields between the lumber and the
    foundation can protect the sill.
  • Raising the foundation above the ground higher
can help avoid the two main problems.

Parts of a Floor System

Joists
  • Carry the weight of the floor structure and
    contents between girders and sills
  • Usually placed on 16 inch centers
  • Joists are attached to header boards. Header
boards are capped by stringer boards

11
Bridging Joists
12
Subfloor
  • Ties the joists together and creates a base for
    the flooring.
  • Nailing pattern every 6 on side and 10 along
    joists
  • In most cases it is glued along the joists. This
creates a seal and helps eliminate squeaks.
