Title: Wisconsin Fast Plants
1Wisconsin Fast Plants
2Day 1 Set upI set up the light we made in class
, water reservoir with blue algae-control, and
saturated water mat as per instructions from
wisconsin fast plants .I then put wicks in each
cell and soil as instructed. 8 quads were
planted with 2-3 fertilizer pellets and 2-3seeds
each from P1,P2, and F1 generations in the
Styrofoam cubes. Also planted were 3 Jiffy
Pellets with 2-3 fertilizer pellets and 2-3
seeds from F1 generation .
3Day 1 different view
4Day 3I see a seed beginning to sprout in the
right front cell
5Day 3 second seed emerging
6Day 6most of the seeds have sprouted
7Day 7plants are 1-3cm tall. P2s are the
tallest, F1s are the shortest
8Day 8P1s measure 1½ to 2cms tallP2s measure
11/2-4cms tallF1s measure 2-4cm tall
9Day 9after noticing the plants leaning toward
the light, I change the bulb to a circular one
that would cover more spaceThe (P2) Father
Generation is homozygous with the dominant allele
for purple stem
10Plants appears to be standing up more
11Day 10first sight of true leaves
12Plants to the right are from the Mother
generation (P1) which are homologous with the
recessive alleles for green stems. Plants In the
middle are (P2) homologous dominant for purple
stem and the plants to the left are the (F1)
generation are heterozygous and are mostly purple
stems.
13Day 12half of the plants are showing true
leaves
14Day 13
15Quads to the right have green stems (P1 and quads
to the left have purple stems
16Day 13(P2) plants starting to bud
17Day 14Plants are separated (one per cell)
18Day 14
19Day 16tall plant with flower starting to bud
20Thoughts at this point
- The lights that we made work well if using only 4
or so quads. The circular bulb definitely covers
more. But if you plant a quad for each group you
will probable need the 6 four foot fluorescent
bulbs. The instructions actually say to plant
1(P1) and 3 (f1) seeds per cube then terminate
the (P1)s at day 4-7. you then intermate
(Pollinate) the (F1)s day 15-17.(F2)s are to be
planted at day 45 and the (P2)s at day 50. - Due to the time it takes to get the next
generation, - I decided to plant (P1), (P2) and (F2) at the
same time.My plan is to show homologous alleles
both - Dominant and recessive for the trait of stem
color. On Sunday, Day 18, if flowers are ready I
will Pollinate the - (P1) with the (Ps)s.I will also intermate the
(F1)s to see what the - (F2) generation will look like.Other things I
will change will be 1.To separate seedlings at
day 4-5 instead of day 14 - 2. To keep track of exactly how many seeds are
- planted vs. how many germinate. 3. Keep track
of how many fertilizer pellets - (2 or 3) were added to see if there is an effect.
