2BRAZIL SPLITS INTO FOUR DISTINCT CLIMATIC
REGIONS 1. The coldest part - in fact the only
part of Brazil which ever gets really cold - is
the South and Southeast , the region roughly from
central Minas Gerais to Rio Grande do Sul, which
includes Belo Horizonte, São Paulo and Porto
Alegre. 2. The coastal climate is exceptionally
good. Brazil has been called a "crab
civilization" because most of its population
lives on or near the coast. Temperatures rarely
dip below 77 degrees. 3. The Northeast is too
hot to have a winter. Nowhere is the average
monthly temperature below 25C (77F) and the
interior, semi-arid at the best of times, often
soars beyond that - regularly to as much as 40C
(104F). 4. The large expanses of savanna in the
northern and central Amazon basin, rainfall is
far from constant. Belém is closest to the image
of a steamy tropical city

3The Brazilian currency is the real (pronounced
"hey-al"), plural reais (pronounced "hey-ice").
It's written as R and is made up of one hundred
centavos, written . US dollars are easy enough
to change in banks and exchange offices anywhere,
and are also readily accepted as payment by
luxury hotels, up market restaurants, tour
companies and souvenir shops in the big
cities. Brazilian real is worth just over half a
dollar - R1.75US1 and R2.801 - but it is
strengthening against it.

4BEST TIME TO VISIT
In Brazil, March thru November are the best
months in which to visit due to a drier climate.
December through February are rainy, hot, and
humid months. July through August are the best
time to visit the Amazon, although the climate is
almost always humid and hot.
5IMPORTANT STUFF TO BRING!
For citizens of Canada and the US, a passport,
visa, and proof of onward passage and sufficient
funds are required. Passports must be valid for
six months after date of arrival.
6PRICE OF ACCOMODATIONS
In early 1999, the global markets lost confidence
- virtually overnight - in the Brazilian economy,
sending ripples of hardship throughout the
country as prices of imported goods shot up, in
some cases doubling, and property values dropped,
along with the value of the real against the
dollar. As a consequence, Brazil has once again
become a relatively inexpensive destination for
foreigners, certainly noticeably cheaper than
Europe or the USA. Prices vary and can be as low
as 1500 and as high as 5000 not including
flights.
7FLIGHTS
A standard flight from American Airlines to
Brazil is roughly 1200 US. The price of flights
can change at anytime for any reason. To check
flights to Brazil go to www.aa.com With the
increase in the number of people traveling
Brazil, the Brazilian airlines and foreign flight
companies have increased the flight schedules to
and from Brazil. TAM, VARIG and VASP are the
three main Brazilian air companies operating.

PLACE
TO VISIT
9Rio de Janeiro
10Beaches of Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is famous for its variety of
beaches. Some of the most popular beaches in Rio
De Janeiro include
- Barra da Tijuca
- Arpoador
- Pepino
- Leblon
- Botafogo
11Barra da Tijuca Beach
- Barra da Tijuca is the longest beach in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, with 12 Km of clean and tropical
green water. Barra da Tijuca is often frequented
by refreshing waves inviting to surfing both for
beginners and experienced surfers.
12Arpoador Beach
- Arpoador is mostly know for being one of the best
metropolitan surf spots Rio de Janeiro has. The
rock outcropping creates stable left breakers up
to 7 - 10 feet hight (wave face measure, as
Brazilians do). - Given its metropolitan location, crowds are
ferocious and competitive. Given the fact that
waves start to break against the rock on a good
day, and that a strong riptide along the
promontory creates a quick re-entry, the take-off
point is very small and only locals (or visiting
professional level surfers) have a shot at it.
13Pepino Beach
- Among the main attractions of Pepino beach are
the strong water swells that provide a nice view
though swimming might be hard to practice here.
Still this is a very interesting destination for
experienced surfers in Janeiro. -
- Close to the beach rising from the Atlantic
stands the magnificent Gavea Rock, an impressive
granite mountain laying proudly on Rios shores. - This is a very popular spot for peak lovers, only
experienced and well trained hikers are advised
to take the tour which lasts for about 8 hours.
14Leblon Beach
- Leblon was an area area of difficult access, and
it was once used as a hiding place for runaway
slaves.
- The hilly area on the West side of Leblon beach
is a favorite spot for Rio's rich and famous.
There are many houses, mansions and posh
apartments.
15Botafogo Beach
- Botafogo beach is a charming small sand strip on
the calm bay inlet looking out at Pão de Açúcar,
or Sugar loaf.
- Botafogo beach is great for people who practice
water sports, as well has as a great view. Boats
park at the dock for some time when they leave
Marina da Glória (boat station), or from the
Yatch Club, which has a great variety of boats.
