18Write a paragraph to explain how useful the
following crime maps are.
19Police departments collect information about
crime incidents and display that information on
detailed maps. This allows them to analyze crime
problems and identify solutions.These crime
maps are increasingly available to public. In
Texas the police provide crime maps that not only
display the date and the offense, but also the
street address where the incident occurred.
Should Crime Maps be made available to the
public?
20PROBLEMS!!
- Privacy issues (should the public have easy
access to sex offenders' names and addresses?) - What types of crime information should be
available to the public? - Increased access to information provided by
technology is a threat to the privacy, and even
safety, of victims. In some cases, the
information may embarrass or stigmatize. In other
cases (burglary, for example), the information
could lead to re-victimization. - SO
- While the general public ought to be able to
access information that will help identify crime
problems and patterns, access to specific address
information is usually not necessary.
