The Mountains
  • Located between the Piedmont and Tennessee.
  • Its elevation (height above sea level) ranges
    from about 1,500 to 6,600 feet above sea level.
  • Part of the Appalachian chain that runs from
    Georgia to Quebec, Canada and include parts of
    the Blue Ridge Mountains, Black Mountains, and
    the Great Smoky Mountains.

The Blue Ridge
  • Gets is name from the fact that from a distance
    the mist in the air looks to be aqua blue
  • Runs from New Jersey to the Deep South
  • The Blue Ridge is really just one long landform
    with peaks of various heights

    1800s, travel over the Blue Ridge was laborious
    and expensive

  • Appalachian range runs from New York to Alabama
    and has its highest peaks in North Carolina
  • 43 mountain tops in the state are more than 6,000
    feet above sea level
  • Mount Mitchell in Yancey County is the states
    highest peak at 6,684 feet.
  • This region was the last in the state to be
    settled.

    other regions of the state
  • First settlers lived in coves-valleys where
    streams cut out swathes wide enough for farming
  • Most recently the growth of the economy is
    credited to tourism
  • The latest development for the economy is the
    Christmas tree business with the leading seller
    being the Frasier firs
