The Israel Gerontological Data Center (IGDC) is
one of several Knowledge Centers recently
established with the support of the Israeli
Ministry of Science and Technology in order to
further scientific inquiry. The purpose of the
IGDC is to provide an infrastructure for the
study of population aging in Israel by promoting
access to a wide range of relevant data. The
Center was established in partnership with a
consortium of scientists from the fields of
social science, health and gerontology.

A Database of Linked Aging-Related Records
This database, which was built through the
Central Bureau of Statistics, links between the
following data files for the study of aging in
Israel, while maintaining strict rules of
confidentiality as required
The 1997 survey of people aged 60 / The death
registry / Data files from the population
censuses for 1983 and 1995 / Data files on
National Insurance Institute allowances for 1995
and 1997 / Wage and salary files from 1983 to
1995 (consecutively).
4The IGDC website includes documentation of the
database files and a coordinates file that
indicates the number of people for whom
information will be received after linking the
desired files. The database itself is located at
the Central Bureau of Statistics.

Updated Statistical Tables
This function was built in cooperation with
MASHAV (Planning for the Elderly A National
Database), which is a computerized information
system that contains much of the existing data on
the elderly in Israel.
Within this system, a guided search can now be
carried out in order to locate the table(s)
containing the requested information. In the
future, it will also include historical data
series and international data.
6Two different methods for downloading files
permit incorporation of full tables (pdf files)
or parts of them (excel files) into research
reports in preparation. This database currently
includes about 180 tables.

A Computerized Bibliographic Database
The computerized bibliographic database provides
information on a variety of published sources in
the field of old age and aging in Israel.
The reviewed bibliographical material cited in
the database includes both professional
literature, consisting of articles published in
journals and books published since 2000, and
gray literature, which includes masters
theses, doctoral dissertations and research
reports produced from 2000 onwards.

The bibliographic database currently includes
over 700 sources and a bilingual thesaurus that
currently contains over 1300 matched
gerontological terms.
Direct links to electronic sources are available,
where possible, thus allowing the downloading of
sources.

SHARE Israel Project
SHARE is the EU-sponsored Survey of Health, Aging
and Retirement in Europe that is working to
establish a pan-European interdisciplinary panel
data set covering persons aged 50.
The project brings together scientists from many
disciplines from 11 countries. The
multidisciplinary nature of the data provides
opportunities to examine the complex interactions
between economic, health, psychological, and
social factors determining the quality of life of
the elderly.

This project will look at the choices individuals
and households are currently making, and the
outcomes that are associated with these choices,
as well as assessing how such choices might
potentially respond to policy reform. The overall
objective is to improve our understanding of the
economic decisions of the elderly, in particular
with respect to saving, portfolio choice,
retirement, health expenditures, and
intergenerational transfers.
Israel has now joined the SHARE project thanks to
initiatives taken by the IGDC. With funding from
the NIA, GIF and the National Insurance
Institute, the IGDC has embarked upon the
collection of SHARE data from an Israeli sample,
by means of SHARE survey instruments translated
into Hebrew, Arabic and Russian.
Data collection is being carried out by the Cohen
Institute for Public Opinion Research at the
University of Tel Aviv. The data from
SHARE-Israel will be available to researchers via
the IGDC website in late 2006.
