BATSIn the World Around Us
  • Created by
  • Laura Adams
  • Molly Garner

2
TEKS
  • Construct picture and bar-type graphs
  • Draw conclusions from graphs

3
OBJECTIVES
  • Students should gain an understanding of what a
bar graph is and how it works.
  • Students will measure the wingspans of bats using
    MMs.
  • Students will record the data.
  • Students will take the measurement and put the
same number of MMs on the bar graph.

4
ANTICIPATORY
  • Do you think bats are all the same size?
  • How do you think bats fly?
  • How would a wingspan affect a bat's ability to
fly? Is bigger faster? Is smaller more agile?

5
Instructional Strategies
  • Place the MMs on the first bat from the end of
one wing to the end of the other wing. (This is
    called the Wingspan.)
  • Count the number of MMs.
  • Record the number on your hand-out.

6
Instructional Strategies
  • Can you think of a graph that would record the
information so someone can just look at it and
    understand it?

7
Instructional Strategies
  • BAR GRAPH!!
  • Draw a horizontal line as the X-axis.
  • Draw a vertical line as the Y-axis.
  • Label both axises
  • Y-axis Number of MMs
  • X-axis Bat
  • Make marks on the Y-axis to represent 1 MM and
    number the marks

8
Instructional Strategies
  • Count out the number of MMs that you recorded.
  • Put the MMs in a vertical line on the graph
  • Put a mark where the top MM is.
  • Remove the MMs.
  • Connect the mark to the bottom of the graph.
  • Color in the bar you just created with any color.

9
Independent Practice
  • Repeat for the
  • Mexican Free-Tail Bat
  • Pillad Bat
  • Remember, if you have a question, ask a peer
    before raising your hand!!

10
CLOSURE
  • Name one thing you learned today.
  • When do you think you could use bar graphs in
    real life?
