3The Opportunity How humans interact with the
ocean is also changing!
Last 500 years
4U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Slowing or
even reversing the existing trends of global
warming is the defining challenge of our ages
Motivation
Dr. R. K. Pachauri Chairman, IPCC
Knowledge
- How do we define what constitutes dangerous
anthropogenic interference with the climate
system? - 2) How do we prepare the human race to face sea
level rise a world with new geographic
features? - 3) What changes in lifestyles, behavior patterns
and management practices are needed, and by when?

Skills
Behavior
5Progress will require a sustained societal
involvement. Scientists are key players but are
not often great ambassadors as they are not often
trained to communicate non scientists Developin
g the network of scientists, educators (formal
informal), and environmental networks is the key
for expanding sustained societal involvement.
Building this network represents the long term
goal for COSEE-NOW which grew out of ..

14Diversity in the Ocean Sciences
- Assessing the knowledge
- needs of OOS Cultural Competency
The Geoscience Diversity Initiative should be
based on the development of new and innovative
activities that generally have the following
characteristics There should be effective use of
role models, and near-peer mentors
NSF RIOS students deploy a Rutgers Glider Rosa
Leon (PR), John Roberts (GA), Christi Welter (CO)
NSF supported researchers should be encouraged
to participate in one or more outreach activities
each year. Â This is particularly important for
minority scientists who may serve as role
models.

152) Improve collaboration coordination between
scientists and educators Create an online
community center
We do not need to start from scratch!!
Science Researchers nanoHUB.org
K-12 Educators tappedin.org
16COSEE-NOW Virtual Community Center Elements
- Build a Community (profiles and forums)
- Facilitate Group Work (online collaboration and
meetings) - Share Resources (network library)
- Engage Users (online training)
17Ways in which Users will use the Community Center
- Find or start a project (workgroup)
- Find activities, lessons, online training, links
to datasets, visualizations or other resources - Contribute lesson plans, etc.
- Rate and comment on site content
- Create a user profile and link to colleagues
- Ask a question
- Find an expert (in science or education)
- Research an OOS or how to use RTD
- Share stories (best practices, case studies)
182) Increase public awareness of OOS in order to
improve societys ocean Earth system literacy
We can leverage off of other OOS
investments (Peach, Schofield, Glenn)

20Deliver Information Increase public awareness of
Ocean Observing Systems
Informal education example Liberty Science Center
Over 1,000,000 visitors per year, serves the New
York/New Jersey school systems including urban
largely minority schools facing challenges
21A dedicated teaching space in LSC focused on
OOS. Note all OOS communities!!!
22Gathering Storm Exciting the next generation
- K-12 education
- Professional development programs (MARE)
- Informal learning centers (LSC)
- Undergraduate education (COS, USNA)
- Graduate education (U. Bergen)
23Opportunities moving forward International
Norway United Kingdom France Spain Portugal Cyprus
Canada Japan China Taiwan Australia Germany
Collaborations bringing ocean observing
technology and application to under-developed
countries
24Typical Stages in Best-practices Web Development
- Stage One Kickoff
- Stage Two Requirements
- Stage Three Technical Architecture and
Information Design - Stage Four Build
- Stage Five Test
- Stage Six Deploy
25- Conclusions
- There is a great need to develop better
understanding of the oceans, as they changing as
this will alter human society - Education and outreach is the central KEY area
for the sustained engagement of society - Ocean Observing Systems and the associated
virtual communities will be key to these systems
realizing their synergistic potential - COSEE NOW will hopefully provide a tool to
realize that potential.
