Today's Discussion
  • Introduction to M2G Boiler Technology
  • What it is
  • How it Works
  • U.S. Installations and Pilot Results

3
What is M2G Technology?
4
M2G Technology
  • Microprocessor based technology
  • Controls boiler cycling
  • Reduces waste heat while retaining building
    utility

5
M2G Technology
  • A device that matches boiler operation with true
    building demand

6
M2G Technology
  • Has its own instrumentation
  • Monitors building thermodynamics through
measurement and analysis of boiler water
    temperatures.

7
M2G Technology
  • A device that works at the boiler controller
    level
  • Protective of boilers with respect to thermal
    stressing loading

8
M2G Technology
  • Easily installed
  • Attaches to the boiler
  • All wiring is local to the specific boiler.

9
M2G Technology
  • Compatible with existing controls and operations
  • Dynamic and self adjusting
  • Flexibly adapts to
  • temperature resets,
  • scheduling,
  • seasonal,
  • operator,
  • and BMS operating changes.

10
M2G Technology
  • Failsafe design

11
M2G Technology
  • Low cost with high return on investment

12
M2G Technology
  • Reduction in energy use and carbon emissions

Carbon Emissions
13
How M2G Technology Works
14
Heat loss to flue gas, 18
Heat transferred to system, 80
Radiated heat loss, 2
Heat from fuel 100
15
Typical Hot Water Boiler Operation
  • Boilers operate at a relatively high temperature,
    generally 160F to 180F
  • Boiler operating temperature is not directly tied
to building demand, boilers maintain temperature
even when there is no building demand
  • Once the target temperature is reached the boiler
allows a variance before it re-fires (hysteresis)
  • This happens over and over again, all day, day
    after day
  • This can be extremely energy inefficient

16
M2G response to loading demand (boiler return
water temperatures - by minute)
17
Lagan Valley Hospital
  • Comparison of two days with the same ambient
    temperature.
  • Total burner runtime is reduced by 30.
  • Lead boiler fires are reduced by 20.
  • Lag boiler fires are reduced by 27.
  • Overall energy and carbon emissions were reduced
    by 30.

18
Review
  • We sit below the BMS
  • We work with systems with or without a BMS
  • The M2G is not a time delay system
  • We do not simply reset the thermostat
  • We do not turn off the system for a fixed period
    at a time
  • We allow a dynamic exchange with the boiler
  • Through sensors on the flow and return
  • We work at the boiler control level

19
Compliant with Boiler Industry Codes and Standards
  • Boiler Industry Standards and Requirements
    Compatible
  • Boiler Controls must be independent systems
  • Boiler sub-systems require hardware interlocks
  • Boiler controllers require independent safety
    circuits
  • Boilers require Flame Safeguard Controls
  • Greffens M2G wires directly into the primary
    control circuit
  • Has been designed to be compliant with industry
    safety standards
  • Backward Compatible, works on installed boilers

20
Pilot Methodology
  • Normal pilot period 30 days
  • Side by Side Comparison 1 day on, 1 day off
  • Independent pilot measurement and control
    hardware
  • Dent Loggers (Time of Use)
  • Eagle/Signal 24 hour toggle timer
  • Temperature Monitoring (internal and outside)
  • In-situ testing with all controls fully operative
  • Test status is not indicated to operations
