About This Presentation
Title:

Saint George the dragon slayer2

Description:

The episode Saint George and the Dragon appended to the hagiography of Saint George was Eastern in origin, brought back with the Crusaders and retold with the courtly appurtenances belonging to the genre of Romance. The rider on the white horse in Revelation is a figure given to the first-century Christians as a sign of hope, and that by staying faithful they will be victorious amidst persecutions. –

23rd April On the day of Sant Jordi in
Barcelona- as in all of Catalonia - people give
one another a rose or a book. And its not only
couples that do this. The Generalitat in Plaça de
Sant Jaume is open to the public. In the palace
and around it there is a large rose market. You
can buy books every-where. Documents show that
the tradition of giving away roses as a symbol of
love on the day of Sant Jordi, dates back to the
15th century, even if not the exact date is
known. In 1995 UNESCO declared 23rd April as
World Book and Copyright Day.

The 23rd April is the anniversary of the death of
writers William Shakespeare and Miguel de
Cervantes. They both died on the same day on 23rd
April and in the same year of 1616. In actual
fact Cervantes' death was 10 days earlier,
because Spain was using the Gregorian calendar at
the time, while England used the Julian calendar,
and the two calendars are slightly different.
