14Original Eyvind Earle concept artwork of Aurora
from Sleeping Beauty
15Aurora is based on the princess in Charles
Perrault's fairy tale "Sleeping Beauty", as well
as the heroine who appears in the Brothers
Grimm's retelling of the story, "Little Briar
Rose
16Aurora is the only daughter of King Stefan and
Queen Leah
17As revenge for not being invited to
Aurora's christening, an evil fairy
named Maleficent curses the newborn princess,
foretelling that she will die on her 16th
birthday by pricking her finger on a spinning
wheel's spindle

20The three fairies, Flora, Fauna, and
Merryweather, who have come to bless the child
with gifts are not strong enough to break the
curse, but Merryweather uses her blessing to
soften the curse so that instead of dying, Aurora
will fall into a deep sleep from which she can
only be awakened by true love's kiss

22King Stefan, still fearful for his daughter's
life, orders all spinning wheels in the kingdom
to be burned
23The fairies do not believe that will be enough to
keep Aurora safe, and so they spirit her away to
a woodcutter's cottage in the forest until the
day of her sixteenth birthday
