eccentric 16th-century abode of Afonso de
Albuquerque, former viceroy to India, grabs your
attention with 1125 diamond-shape
spikes (bicos). The casa houses a small museum
dedicated to José Saramago (19222010),
Portugal's most famous writer and a newly added
ground-floor excavation of Roman ruins

42Casa dos Bicos is one of the very few buildings
that survived the 1755 earthquake. Its interior
is occupied by the Saramago Foundation, a space
dedicated to the Nobel Prize-winning Portuguese
writer. It hosts special literary events and
contains the author's library. Stop in the
bookstore to pick up one of his works, and don't
miss the olive tree planted out front, taken from
his birthplace, Azinhaga. Below the tree are the
ashes of the great writer

62Monument by José de Guimarães Praça 25 de Abril
63The work Lisbon (a tribute to the builders of the
city) by José de Guimarães (1999) The descending
towards the water has also as a consequence that,
in the beginning of the axe, the sculpture and
the water are at the level of the eyes. As we
descend, the sculpture, that represents a seated
woman, goes up, relatively to the horizon line,
until in a certain point where she is "seated" on
the water
