From the architect  MAAT is an outward-looking
museum located on the banks of the Tagus in
Belém, the district from where the Portuguese

Blending structure into landscape, the kunsthalle
is designed to allow visitors to walk over, under
and through the building that sits beneath a
gently expressed arch one of the oldest forms
in western architecture

Building on Portugals rich tradition of craft
and ceramics, three-dimensional crackle glazed
tiles articulate the façade and produce a complex
surface that gives mutable readings of water,
light and shadow

The overhanging roof that creates welcome shade
is used to bounce sunlight off the water and into

power station alongside the new Amanda
Levete-designed space - each with four galleries

The dock area below 25 de Abril Bridge along the
river in Alcantara between Baixa and Belem is one
of the city's most pleasant places for a drink in
late afternoon and with a lively atmosphere at
night. Former warehouses overlooking an
attractive yachting marina have been transformed
into a multitude of cosmopolitan
bars, restaurants, and clubs for all tastes

The Oriente Museum is located in the Alcântara
area, in an old port warehouse from the 40s

Portugal has always had a strong connection to
the Orient and this museum is dedicated to the
promotion and preservation of this strong
bond. Here, the entire history of the strong
Portuguese presence in Asia is represented,
including the era when Vasco da Gama discovered
the sea route to India.
